starfish legs falling off

I have a star fish that two legs are off the star fish is still alive and the legs are to and it is about three weeks know
Do I need to take the legs or starfish out ? Is it going to die? What should I do ?

Are any of the pieces 'melting'? i.e. the tips of the legs are tattered and it looks like white cotton fluff is coming off of them.

no and the legs move around just like a worm.

How big of tank do you have? Starfish need a big mature tank, except small starfish like micro brittle stars. I would think it's stress related. Does he have a place to hide when the lights are on?

it is a 125 and yes there are lots of places in the tank to hide. It has been up and running for about 5 yrs. and I have had it for about 2 yrs.??

If the legs are moving about and not melting, especially since it has been 3 weeks, then they may grow into starfishs themselves. That can be one of the ways they reproduce. Anyone in the tank pick on him? Might also be a reaction to getting picked on, kind if like a lizard that loses its tail as a defense mechanism. Hope they will be okay.
