This lens is suppose to be the god of macro lens ....
I don't hve the full equipment yet this is very hard to focus since being only manual and with no focus ring ..
Pictures r shot in a semi sunny day
Any ways this is my 1st attempt with my shaking hands no tripod no flash or other gear !!!

nice pics I recommend camera exchange if your looking for a nice sturdy stand I picked up my gitzo stand there a couple of years ago and have no complaints. I'm pretty sure they can point you in the right direction for lighting and other equipment.

I haven't practiced much since than ....
Close macro does require a nice flash ...
That's the next equipment on my list ..trying to hunt some used one in eBay for a better price ...
Thanks

I've never used flash..... There's ways around flash...
the god of macro lenses IMO is the 100mm IS USM....
i bought the non IS, I couldn't justify spending anymore :/
Decent start.... Let see some reef shots now!!

Tony I also hve the same macro lens as u do ..
But canon 65 mpe is different and whole new world if can get around it ...
Closer u get in macro shots more light u need ..
Working distance on this macro lens on 1x is 5" and on 5x is roughly around 1" ..so flash light is must or u get absolutely blurry and dark pictures

As now I am not using any tripod and trying to learn capturing macro images by holding camera in my hands ..i set my ISO anywhere between 100 to 400 depending upon the movement of the object and my hands ....
Also this lens is not ideal for reef shots !!

just read up on the lens.... yup says it isnt the best for reef shots. Although I did see a few on RC.
So your planning on getting into this macro stuff? I really want a new lens...

Why is that?
I might trade my reg 100mm for L series or even sigma 150mm depending upon the time

for macro shots wouldn't you want the stability of a tripod ?

Not necessarily....
Also L series are IS version and sigmas got OS.

I wouldn't shoot macro without a tripod... Even with IS, the slightest movement will alter the image.

All these pics were shot without a tripod ...these are old pics using canon100mm reg lense no L series ...does not hve any image stabilization ...

They look great but on the 2nd one of the anemone, I can see some blur on the tentacles..
not saying you can't take pics without a tripod, but definitely helps.....especially when a long shutter is being used, the more stable the camera the less ISO you have to use.... Meaning no blown out pics....
excuse my terminology as I am still learning too...

its great for the price, couldn't justify spending more for the canon brand.... Only problem is you have to take the battery out to turn it off....... Which I'm fine with now......
