Probably live rock dying off. It will clear up on its own. Just be patient.

Yeppers! You can run a bag or two of carbon to help with the smell. But make sure you change the carbon out after a week or two.

Bacterial additives can help too. I used prodibio bio digest during my last setup and it took a few weeks off the cycle time.

could dead sand be the cause of this?

put some carbon in a sock with some water flow, smell should go away, hopefully

edit: rinse carbon 1st before placing in tank:bigsmile:

Personally I'd take it back down and rinse everything off. Start over with your rock and sand as sterile as you care to make it and use a bacterial culture to seed/cycle the tank again. I know it's a waste of salt but the cost of carbon and phosphate removers could very well cost more then new salt water. With the smell, I'd be willing to bet your ammonia levels are very high and to continue to cycle from this point wouldn't make sense to me.
