what are you looking to do exactly what's the goal? bio balls are like rock rubble they hold detritus, even with my large rocks I get some in my bare bottom fuge.

I was just running the sump with a large skimmer and the third chamber I used for frags and it was BB. Worked perfect FWIW. Hope you like the system though

In my fuge, i made little platforms out of egg crate and rested a few chunks of LR on top... Makes it a wholeot easier to siphon out the bad stuff when I do a mini water change..... Critters usually get into the rocks when my light comes on, so I'm not worried about losing a few..

nah bare is better! it's up to you but I would go with bio balls or rubble... just grow some macro and couple pieces of LR it's simple.

For 22 years I ran first BIO Bale and then BIO Balls. I have never had a crash or an issue. I run filter fluff on top of them to help keep them clean. From 1999 to 2010 when I sold my 200 my Nitrates where below 5 in my 200. All kinds of stuff grew in the bottom of my wet dry. I never removed them to rinse or anything.
