I have been eying the MAAST forums for some time for knowledge, info, and entertainment. Then I realized I was a FW hobbyist among SW hobbyist, you can't peak in the windows and not join in. So I sold my FW setup, and got myself a 62 gallon bow front.........PLEASE HOLD THE APPLAUSE........The tank is currently being drilled, and set up to be reef ready (I was going FOWLR but know a REEF tank is probably very near) and should be home on Saturday to start the journey. I will update pics and I am sure questions very soon.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of MAAST, and if I can help in any way let me know.

I my god, I took the new tank to my LFS to have it drilled and converted to reef ready, they did not see it was tempered glass and shattered it! Idiots, and they state they are not liable, so I had to purchase another tank. New tank will be here by Friday, so far I am tapped out and have not started my new hobby......lol

That bites, they should have warned you before..

i know when I did mine, elegant made sure it wasn't tempered and let me know it could break... I was cool with it as tanks were not made to be drilled in the first place..

Hope it all gets worked out.

I would have made a choice to go forward or not, but the $%#! LFS said nothing prior to drilling, and only offered "Sorry this happened" after they shattered it. The LFS owner offered a replacement at cost ($262.00), which I appreciate but I am out the initial purchase.

Would you sue the LFS for replacement of the tank they broke since no prior warning written or verbal was given? He is currently refusing any form of retribution.

I would file a claim with the BBB or your credit card company.

Strictly speaking from a technical standpoint, if they didn't have you sign anything that said they were not liable, for example: a contract, then they are not protected. It would have to be settled in civil hearings though and depending on the cost of the tank, while it bites, it may just be in your best interest to eat the loss and move on. I hope they didn't charge you for the drilling.

Welcome to the not-so-cheap and sometimes flat-out-depressing side of aquariums.

Tank bought for cash second hand, hence LFS stating now we are not responsible, I took it in to plumb an overflow box and drill for refugim. I understand why they would state this, but nothing said prior to drop off, or during many phone calls and interactions. Only said after the mistake occurred.

@ rrasco

My thoughts as well, as bad as it is stinging the LFS is giving me new tank at fair cost, and not sure about drill charges yet..lol........possibly, as well as cleanup of glass?

Next time you are looking to drill a tank, I can help you check for tempered and could even help you drill it. I have all the bits.

Are they drilling the new tank for you? Are they retaining any liability for that one?

Nope Rrasco not a chance LFS is touching this one, coming in pre drilled from manufacture, overflow box installed, just need to take home set up and cycle.

I wanted to update my MAAST family, I was upset when the LFS shattered new tank, I even tossed around suing them.
UPDATE:
Today I called the LFS to check if the new tank arrived, it did and they were plumbing it for me. I got there ready to battle and demand something. The LFS employee (Manager?) not only took time to walk me through the tank, and confirm my satisfaction but he also presented me a bill.

They decided to charge me what I was going to pay for the overflow and drilling to the original tank ($120.00), and for the new plumbing ($70.00), then deduct LFS credit I had of $65.00. My OUT THE DOOR $135.00, for my new factory drilled reef ready tank(was $262.00+$70.00=$332.00).

I was shocked, happy but shocked, every now and then a business makes a decision to do what is right for a customer, and keep them as a customer. I held the name prior, but now think they deserve billing.

Decent selection, fair prices, always willing to trade livestock for credit and negotiate.
Most important, they respect their customers and their role in keeping there business open.

My family has always used them, I was surprised by their initial not us approach. Glad they made it right just the same. He just got some new livestock in and everything was looking good, but prices right now were a little higher than others. They are always willing to work with you though.
