I was thinking 1" drilled drain with 1/2" drilled return.

Black sand, sexy shrimp, Pom Pom crab, 1 clown, 1 anemone. Maybe a plate coral?

Small tanks are some of the hardest to drill in my experience. Usually 1 out of 3 are successful.

big stock list for a 2.5 gallons before rock... just put a hob fuge mode a aqua clear. I wouldn't try a nem or clown in there but there are plenty other small gobies

Azoo made a HOB palm filter just for this purpose.

Agreed. Too small for a clown for sure and probably too small for any fish IMO. A tiny goby would be the best bet if you are going to get a fish. I have a 3g pico at work with a few random corals and two sexy shrimp. Sexy's are super cool for a pico!

Got one at work with the aqua clear 70. It has a maroon clown that I bought when he was the size of my finger nail, he's gotten a lot bigger over the last year but really seems to be happy in there. One day he'll have to move on though. Had an anemone first but got sucked up in the intake the first day. Overall love the tank and about to upgrade the lighting to LEDs.

Yeah, agreed on what's been said about the clown. Evaporation is going to be killer so an ATO would help. I've sucessfully kept a small clown goby in a 2.5 gallon before for a few months before giving it away, was a cool fish and everyone loved it, maybe give that a try?
