Sooooo with the great news of petco's $/gallon sale I've decided to finally upgrade to a 40 breeder. Here's a breakdown of equipment I've got so far and what I still need to buy.

Things I have:

24x 3w LED DIY (may upgrade down the road to two of these)
DIY Sump
SCA-302 Skimmer
RK Lite running 2x PC4 and Advanced Lighting Module
Petco Broklyn metal stand
Vortech mp10
50# Dry rock made by Ducatti911 (neil
Allan's old acrylic cube to be used as a frag/ holding area for my photon clown pair from Rob!

Things I need to Buy:
Return pump (not sure which one)
Overflow box (shooting for eshops 800)

Things I need to do:
Pickup tank from petco today
Pickup stand from San antonio
Design woodwork to make stand enclosed

This will be a peninsula style tank with the entire stand covering will be able to easily slide on and off.

Here's a picture of what my sump should look like. This is not to scale as the cube will reach be right at the ends of the stand. I haven't fit anything yet so hopefully everything checks out.

Dude, you keep getting bigger tanks. You're going to have to change your tank from Nanoreefer to mediumreefer. Should be a cool tank. You always do an awesome job. Looking forward to the build.

Lmao I was actually just thanking that. Soon it will be large reefer ;).

Just kidding, the reason for the upgrade is I got two great deals that pretty much forced my hand. A 25$ metal stand from Tristan23 and then petco hooking it up with a good deal. Also I picked up Allan's old cube from jeremy for pretty cheap and it gives me lots of space for coral grow out/ monitoring and a new pair of clowns!

Excited to see how this will play out. So does that mean your overflow will be on the side?

So running into some logistical things on this tank namely placement of equipment.

My issue is that the mp10 occupies about 2'' of space and the overflow box I'm looking at takes up 8'' of space. Which means the mp10 would have to be on the side of the tank that is closest to the center of the room. not a huge deal but defintely something that I'm working on..

More updates:

Working on logistics of this tank, and I realized that I'd overflow my current sump when I turned my PH off. This means two things: never turn off the pump (bad idea in the making) or use the cube tank as the sump and get a 10g to use as a frag tank. I've had great success with 10 gallons so I think that's what I'll be doing.

Picked up the stand and tank today. fitted stuff under the tank. The sump tanks + growout will be on a wooden sheet so it'll be off the carpet.

Also tank is in it's final position.

So you got that stand. I was mulling it over, waited, and assumed it was gone a while back. It's the decisions you don't make that you regret. Can't wait to see this together. My 40B is still sitting in my reef room, I don't have plans for it, but they are such cool tanks I don't want to get rid of it.

You should drill it, I have the bits, I could help you if you want.

Zack
Fri, 5th Apr 2013, 02:48 PM
Yeah it was a great deal for 25 bucks. I think for now I'm going HOB overflow simply because I move a lot and don't want to have to deal with dissasembaling and re-assembling hard plumbing.

hobogato
Fri, 5th Apr 2013, 03:07 PM
is the bottom tempered zack? if not, why dont you drill and do an overflow in the center of that back panel so you dont have to use a hob?

hobogato
Fri, 5th Apr 2013, 03:09 PM
d'oh, i guess i should have read the newest posts huh? if you put in unions, the hard pluming is easy to deal with :)

Zack

I think my rationale thus far is that, this apt is perfect for a pennensula however a future apt might not have as much space in the room for a 36'' tank sticking out of the wall. My current apt is basically a large square which is pefect, however my roomates apts both look like tetris blocks with little free space for a large tank. Also, I've had a great experience thus far with the hob overflow in the time i've had it.

Edit: and yeah, totally forgot about unions :P I think right now I'm in a, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" state of mind.

Updates:

Return and overflows will be here this friday. I appreciate the drilling offers but for now, I think I'm going to stick with a HOB overflow until I find a permanent residence that has the space for this tank.

Also, I'm thinking of a stocking list.. I have a huge skimmer for this tank so I'm thinking:

Blue chromis x5
Bangaii cardinal x2
Darwin Clown x2
Six line x1

Maybe it seems like a lot.. your thoughts?

BBQHILLBILLY
Mon, 8th Apr 2013, 08:10 PM
For sure like the Darwin Clowns. I had a bangaii and they allways were bullys to the pajamas. Now I have 6 pajamas and 0 bangaii.

Zack
Tue, 9th Apr 2013, 09:56 AM
Were the Bangaii's mean to other non-cardinal fish?

Here's a mockup of the left side of the aquascape. right side will be posted once the lights come on.

I actually really like it. I'm stuck on skinning it so that my equipment is hidden in it but I'm terrible at woodwork so it may be a while before I get something I like. The one complaint I have about it is that the x shaped bars on each end on the stand make it hard to really make full use out of the short sides of the stand, however this won't affect most people who are using the tank against the wall. Also, another great feature is that the legs of it screw in and out, which allow you to adjust for an un-level room.

Yeah I'm super excited for this. Picking up the last few things for the build next friday and hopefully getting the tank wet on Sunday.

Zack
Tue, 16th Apr 2013, 11:11 PM
So got most of the equipment in and did some work today:

Spray paint tank
Get conduit and drill for the light hooks
Get measurements for my second attempt at skinning the stand

Here's my to-do list:

Get vaccum looking tube for the HOB overflow
Get tubing for the return pump that fits my return
Get wood cut to match the size of the tank so I can drill a light below my tank
Get 40lbs of Fiji Pink from TT
Fill & Enjoy

I may have to buy some wiring to extend my driver box from my led setup, however I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

I'll get some pics up tomorrow.

Zack

So I'm re-thinking my stock list:

Current fish:

2x B/w Clowns (or maybe 2x Photon)
1x Six Line
1x Springeri Dottyback

I definitely want to add a school of 3 or 5 blue green chromis

Now for color, anyone have any good suggestions of a bit of color, maybe yellow I can add?

I want to go with a small yellow tang but I know it'll out grow the tank and rehoming it can be a hassle.

I'm thinking of possibly going with a captive bred mandarin that eats frozen shrimp..

Any ideas for a small fish with color and personality?

hobogato
Thu, 18th Apr 2013, 01:58 PM
i would suggest a candy hogfish for yellow - great fish and they dont get big fast

You already have a 6-line. I was going to recommend a pink streaked wrasse but, those two wont get a long in that tank.

Very nice man  humane society adoption ? Saw ur shirt in vid, not stalker lol.

Lol it's cool, and no, this dog was adopted on craigslist. The shelter in SM isn't a kill shelter and this dog had worms, a ring worm skin infection, and a horrible flea infection when I saw him so I had to adopt him, saved the little guys life IMO. He's dealing with some flea issues now because my apartment complex stopped spraying but I got on their case and he's getting better.

And I worked in the Humane society as a volunteer back in 06 for a few years to kill time between soccer seasons :P

The best part about this tank is I have this HUGE chair that is extremely comfy thats sitting next to one of the long sides of the tank.. perfect lounge chair to enjoy my reef. My dog sits and stares at the tank all day when I'm not on the chair. He think's it's his tank.

Haha nice man. I look forward to seeing the tank grow. I just started up a 29 and I'm testing to see how serious I am about getting back into this hobby. Lol I have a petco dollar a gallon sale 40 breeder and stand in my closet that might be getting used if I feel the 29 isn't big enough for my plans.

So if you've seen my other thread, my six line was being a big bully so I threw him in the sump. Yesterday, I notice a crap ton of jelly down there, enough to freak me out.. for some reason, I thought my tank might be having some stray wiring so I got a meter and checked, nothing.. I removed the six line, and took out a few net fulls of the jelly and put him back in the DT.. cut to this morning and the stuff was on a few corals and LR, I freak out abit, do some research....

Nothing,

Now I'm reading wrasses make a protective coating of mucous, which explains the mucous in the sump, and the mucous from today because he was freaking out last night. Hopefully he calms down, this stuff is kinda gross, and hopefully that's what I'm dealing with here.

Btw, I'll be in town saturday night if you want to meet up to get that canopy and tank, and maybe sunday evening I can swing by your place and pick up the nem. I know it's mothersday but if you could meet for 5 mins that'd be great.

So here's how I made the bracket,

Parts list:
Dry wall screws (or wood screws for stand) $2.00
3/4 conduit 10' $3.50
3/4 conduit clamps $2.00 for 5
3/4 conduit grips .35 each, need 2 per unit
3/4 conduit 90 degree elbow $4.00 (optional)
3/4 conduit couplings $1.00 for 5 (optional)
3/4 conduit cap $.35
11'' zip tie 20 pack 2.00
Spray paint- 4.00

You will see that this has a few optional parts.. these are for those like myself who do not have access to a pipe bender.

Step one: measure your conduit to your needs. For me, I needed a 52.5'' vertical pipe, and a 32'' horizontal pipe. Then paint conduit (optional)
Step two: place vertical conduit on wall or stand and drill the conduit into the wall by using the 3/4'' conduit clamps. I used three clamps and six screws for this part
Step three: unscrew the mounting screws on your ai sol and place the screw in between the flat portion of the rigid clamp and screw this into your fixture. Repeat for each mounting screw:

http://www.lowes.com/pd_75308-15527-49110_0__?productId=1100127&Ntt=conduit&Ns=p_product_price|0

step four: if your conduit was cut, not bent, insert the couplings into your vertical and horizontal pipe, and attatch them to the 90 degree elbow. Screw all the screws in extremely tight.

step five: slide the Ai units onto the conduit and tighten down the bolts so that the sols do not slide.

step six: zip tie down any excess wires and enjoy!

Meh.... my torch has looked pretty rough the last two days, hoping its' just pooping or being irritated by my fish?

Zack
Sun, 12th May 2013, 12:59 AM
Updates:

For whatever reason, my torch looks like hell. Figured it may be due to too much direct flow and after talking to Steven at polly's for about 45 minutes, I think that's what it may be. I think I rushed the LED change a bit so I'm going to dial it back to my "acclimation setting" and ramp it up each week.

While at Polly's, I picked up a long tentacle plate and a tomingi tang. He's about 3.5'' and he has plenty of room so for the moment, he's the center peice I was looking for. I'm deciding now between a starry blenny and a midas blenny and still need to get my bangaii cardinal pair, but for the moment, everyone seems happy. Didn't get to enjoy the tank much today because I worked 10 hours then went home, emptyed the skimmer cup, and drove to SA for mothers day. Plate was still opening up, it's about 35% open. I made it an eggcrate grid to sit on for the time being until I get to watch it and make sure there's no sand growing on it. Also, one of the mollies I acclimated to SW passed away two days ago. Not sure what happened but it was doing great and was the "bully" of the tank, then all of a sudden it died. I did see it touch the bubble tip nem but I feel like that wouldn't have killed it.. who knows.. No fin damage either and his two other friends are all doing great. The bubble nem I got from amanda is doing allright I guess. Tentacles are BARELY starting to come up. I guess patience is key.

Also, one of my favorite two zoa frags are not looking well. One just hasn't opened in two weeks and the other, one half looks dead and the other half looks good. Not sure why, but It's upsetting. I'm thinking it may be possibly getting stung by my duncan.

I'll be doing a 10 gallon water change on Monday night and hopefully my torch and other LPS will look better. The ones on the left side seemed to not look 100%. I realize I should just make daily updates of my tank, seems like a good idea so I can record changes.

I also started feeding cyclopeeze! Thanks Dow for hooking me up a while back, I found the bottle in my closet and was super excited.

I also realized, I think I may have the greatest gf ever.. a few nights ago, after watching a coral reef documentary, she said since I love the rasta zoas in her tank so much, I could have them if I gave her both my MCC favites.. drives a hard bargain but heck, those things are beautiful so we did that trade.

I will say the color is a bit lacking with some of the reds but the vega upgrade in a few months will fix that.

Sun, 19th May 2013, 10:38 AM
Looks good. Are you dead set on the upgrade to vega? Is it just a package deal or will they allow you to customize the pucks when you order it? I can tell you the whites are way overpowered and the jury is still out on the reds and greens. I plan to redo some of the pucks on my Vegas and the greens are the first to go.

What blenny did you decide on? I've had both and like both. The starry was a better algae eater with a slight personality. My Midas blenny now is lazy with a ton of personality. My tail spot is small, but a worker with personality.

Zack
Sun, 19th May 2013, 11:36 AM
I was deadset until the hydra got previewed.. I think I will upgrade these eventually but I hit a real nice color temp with 35% white, 40% blue 50% royal so I'm in no real need to update. As for the blenny, I'm still thinking midas. I saw a starry blenny at pollys and while it was pretty, I have too many black fish in my tank.

I know the feeling bro, I lost a ton of clowns last year when I brought some fish in from Hawaii...after that I swore to never do wild caught again. Captive bred sure does limit a lot of chances of introducing diseases to a system. All of those fish can be acquired as captive bred.

Of course if you can quarantine and treat ALL incoming fish that would be the best solution and afford you the right to bring in wild caught.

Long story short, I cracked my hospital tank right on the front pane and put the fish back in the display instead of cramming em with the baby clowns. No signs of any infection yet after two weeks, and after talking to Steven at polly's, he had said if it is present, and they are not stressed, it shouldn't bother them.

I've been upping my salnity and getting my calc and alk levels up these past two days so corals are adjusting to the new salinity. I'll have some good pics when everything decides to open up.

About to leave, tested all my params:

Calcium 420 ppm
Alk 10 DKH
Nitrate 0
Phosphate 0

Thrive recomends raising to 12ppm alk and calcium to 450 so I will be dosing accordingly.

Still dealing with cyano so added so Fritz slime remover and dosed 12.5 ml calcium and 12 ml alk. Alk was added early morning and calcium just added. When I get back I'll retest and continue dosing until I can get calcium and alk at ideal levels and then I will be able to figure out a good daily/ weekly dosing regiment.

I did notice before I left, my torch looked pretty bad, but then again I haven't really seen it opening much so hopefully I just caught it during a feeding session. Also performed a small water change on the QT tank with the midnight and platinum clownfish.

The nems look really good and hopefully I can add on on Monday. I will be rehoming the rose that was in here previously.

Now my nem count will be 2. 1x Sherman and 1x Mini GBTA from ben.

Hopefully when I get back I can find a home for the clone of the Sherman.

Attatched the nem to the rock today, it's HUGE.

The second split is also doing very well. I should have one up for sale very soon. You can't even tell this one split, just as big.

Zack

More updates:

The split turned out to be actually a bit bigger than the one I'm keeping. It's doing well and is taking up an entire breeder box. I'm going to have to move it to my clown tank where there are no open pumps until the buyer can pick it up.

Also, thrive bio-active+ Fritz sludge remover has done great work to clean up my diatom bloom I had after my mini cycle and now the tank looks great.

I picked up a pair of clowns from Neil and the momma is about 4-5 inches big and LOVES the Sherman Rose. They are very protective of the anemone and have bitten me twice. I believe that they will lay soon as they have begun clearing sand beneath a cove in my tank.

I've been adding alk daily and will retest everything tomorrow per thrive instructions.

I got to take out my sand wash it of all ditrus and anything else in it then acid dip the dead rock and seed my tank with fritz 9. My tank looks like a big pile o dung.

So I've been hearing a lot of rattling and noise from the mp40, which was annoying, turns out, stupid me forgot to change the spacer size for a 40 breeder tank like Ramsey specifically told me about three times while I was at his house. Before it was rattling every few minutes and the wave at 5 LEDs was pretty average. Now I'm rocking a .5'' wave easily at 5 LEDS and got it to go about an 1'' when turned up to ludachris mode. Now just the normal vortech motor sound, not too shabby :). Note to self, have towels ready when going to ludachris mode.

Also, ordering the hydra upgrade Kit and AI wireless controller next friday.

Decided over the director because I'm the kinda person that values displays that are self contained i.e. not having to log on to check on something etc..

I'll probably get the director sometime in the future, just not for me right now with no dedicated wifi in my house.

I also swapped out my old sump with the one from Geroge! Man that thing is awesome, can't wait to get a fixture down there to grow out some frags!

HAHA, yes, I've done that before which is why I told you about it. Glad you figured it out and you're happy with it. They are noisy, but it's not a noise that bothers me. Not like gurgling in the sump.

Let me know how you like the hydras. For the price they seem pretty awesome. After seeing Bernie's amazing SPS tank today though, I'm really starting to think about MH's or T5s. :O

I will!

Just put in an order for the hydras today. And yeah, I've seen great tanks under all lighting, but for me, yearly or twice yearly bulb replacements would kill me, especially for t5 units.

For whatever reason, it doesn't look good at all full screenbut looks great in the pane on 480p. I think it's the compression of the video, I'll check later, but for now it looks good.

Awesome video, Zack. Greatly appreciate the review. I'm probably going to make the dive and get the upgrade. I am curious if they can do clear optics. I'm thinking about them for a deeper tank. Between 24" to 36" so that extra punch would be nice. No worries about getting par readings. Just keep us up to date on how they're doing on your tank and if you here any word from AI.

Do they do unfrosted lenses though? That's what I'm really curious about. I have a question for ya. So the upgrade kit comes with all the internal parts yeah? So could you mount that upgrade kit to a different heatsink or a makeshift heat sink to save that additional 200 per? I know I'd still need the data cable and power supply. Just curious instead of ordering a hydra for 400 if I can get all the inners from the upgrade kit and mount them separately... what say you to this quandary?

350gt
Mon, 29th Jul 2013, 06:45 PM
Awesome video, tank looks great.... that RBTA looks amazing under the lighting....

You have to admit the features from AI are pretty neat.....

Zack
Mon, 29th Jul 2013, 08:36 PM
Well.. yes and no, I say no because you'd need a fan and have the fan be mounted in a way that allows for proper cooling of the leds.. also, I'm not sure if I was supposed to, but they do ask for serial numbers.. I didn't get asked because mine were on file..

I do suppose though, if you had a heatsink that was drilled and tapped and had the same amount of heat reducing qualities as the AI sol heatsink, or even if you bought one, I'm sure you could upgrade it. You'd also need something to hold the lenses down and cover the board, It would be possible though!

And thanks tony! And yeah, the features are AMAZING!

BTW, how are you liking the director?
