I am looking through ebay right now for various things, and I keep seeing lots of protein skimmers under $20, but they are from Hong Kong. I know I read somewhere where Hong Kong basically have knock offs. Are these knock offs even worth it?

Also wanted to know, for a 55G tank, what size of a skimmer should I be looking at. And if I look for a skimmer for my 145G that is in process of repair/build, would it be over kill to put a skimmer of that size on a 55G tank?

I doubt very seriously I am going to get it, the fact it comes from Hong Kong scares the crap out of me. Besides just like you said, dont skimp on a skimmer. Which is why you dont DIY on it either.

Still wanted to know if a skimmer rated for, lets say I do one rated for a 250 Gallons for my 145G build, would it be over kill to put that in my 55G?

The skimmer on my 185g is rated for 600g. I'd like to really look into whether its detrimental to the system having one that is this disproportionate to the system. Or maybe I'm just taking up valuable space in the sump. :)

I have a NAC9 (395-530) on my 105. It seems to not skim all the time, like there is not enough stuff to pull out for the big neck. It's on/off whenever it feels like it. Pulls out everything though. FWIW, the Bubble Magus skimmers are from China too, great products. The SCA skimmers on ebay are also Chinese, but they work great and are a lot easier on the wallet.
