are you sure it's the shaft?
inside the pinwheel the little plastic piece is known for snapping..

it was the little white stick thing ive had that pump since 2008 so i desided to just buy all brand new so i ordered this just about hour ago http://www.marinedepot.com/Sicce_PSK_2500_Professional_Skimmer_Pump_w_Needle_ Wheel_and_Inlet_Venturi_Submersible_Aquarium_Pumps _for_Aquariums-Sicce_USA-XJ11151-FIWPSB-vi.html
whats the defrence with the big and small wheel i got the big 1 you think it will out do the Mesh Enker mat 4 i change it every year and also does the red needle wheel have the same probem never works the first time when turn it on , i was going to get the PSK1000 but im not going pay 50 more for it hehe

i have replaced those ceramic shafts with carbon fiber rods. you should be able to find a comparable diameter at a good hobby shop for prettty cheap.

I replaced the pump thinking it was the pump... The problem is the psk 2500.... It's a hard starter and snaps the shaft or the tab inside the pinwheel....
i had about 2 or 3 broken tabs in the 2+ years... Not a big deal but always seems to hit when I'm least expecting it... I have no idea if the red pin wheel would out do what you have working but it has impressed me over the purple and white pinwheels...
you could have bought the psk 600 which is equivalent to the 2500 but just need to add some sort of adapter, which I didn't want to do...
I've had luck with my new pump and went about a year with no issues...

not sure if they will have it at hobby lobby. i dont remember where i found it, but it was a hobby shop that specialized in rc planes, etc. once you find it, you can carefully cut it to the right length with a hacksaw.
