So, I'm having problems with my light. I will turn on my metal halide, it will be on for 15 mins or so then "click" sound, and turn off. A few minutes later it'll click again and turn back on. I understand these have a heat sensor that shut it off kind of fire proof. Is the ballast bad and causing it to shut off. I've switched bulbs with no difference. Changed power source with no difference. I ultimately want to retrofit it to LEDs but don't have the money right now. Considering there is not much difference from DIY kits and new ballast. Any information, comments, suggestions will help.
Thanks,

David

Welcome to MAAST!

It sounds like it may be either the ballast or the thermal switch. Since the thermal switch is cheaper, I'd replace it. If it still does it, go for the retro kit. I was never sure how the kept those hoods and tanks cool enough. I've got the other two versions. The 3w led hood and the cfl hood.

Thanks, this light is really upsetting I can only imagine how my corals are feeling. I'll try to replace the thermal switch soon as I get a chance. I'm really hoping for the cheap fix but, although secretly wanting the LEDs. How hard is it to set up those kits

Polarbear recently did a rapid led retro on his bio cube. He really loves it from what I recall. Louis at Elegant Reef can order the kits for you and you can enjoy his shop when you go there too!

JT ( gseclipse02) had a JBJ ballast for sale for $40 not too long ago. It may be available still

So I got the new ballast, and quickly found out the MH 5 prong outlet does not match the three prong connection from the viper k2 ballast. Everything is the same except for an extra part inside the nano box. I switched everything from one box to the other and rewired it. Success!!! My light does not shut off anymore. Thanks JT and Ben for all the help.

Sweet! I bet the extra pins are for the fan built into the viper.
