Any advice on catching a fish in an overflow?
I got a shrimp goby a while back, but hadn’t seen the him since I released him. The shrimp has been active so I figured everything was fine. Until this morning, while scrubbing algae I saw him bobbing around in the overflow.
It’s a hi fin red banded goby, maybe two inches long, thinner than a pencil. White, with thin red bands that fade when he’s stressed, like when I’m trying to nab him out of the overflow.
I tried a quick swipe with a net, then drained the overflow (honestly hoping he’d just get sucked up and end up in the bucket). No luck. With the overflow empty, I used a mirror and a flashlight to look around. I couldn’t see any sign of him!
The canopy makes it impossible to peer down in there. I suppose there’s a small chance he went down the drain and ended up in the sump, but I doubt it – I think he was flattened up against the wall of the overflow or hiding in a clump of algae.
I’m going to try again tomorrow. I’ll drain the overflow again, and take off the canopy and remove the pipes if I have to. Not looking forward to it, but I’ve been trying to get a shrimp goby for a year, I’m not going to let this little brat outmaneuver me.
