I'm sorry, but I just don't agree. Publicity or not, we should ALL be good stewards, and we should be encouraging others to be good stewards. This show may be wildly popular right now, but how many of you want to see the headlines when some behind the scenes reporter starts showing dead fish in the trash? All it's going to take is one wanna be Geraldo and we are all going to get smeared. Just a little sensationalism, and we will be fighting animal rights groups. Been there, done that with my other hobby.

So the LFS gets good publicity (maybe), what kind of publicity do you think they will get when people have livestock die trying to emulate the show? Word of mouth will bite you in the tail a lot quicker than some tv show can build you up.

Its happening right now without the show. How many hobbyist put tangs in small tanks. I hear it all the time here on MAAST.
The show is a show. As hobbyist get into the hobby they learn as they progress. How many have bleached corals? How many big fish in little tanks?
Its a show for people to oooo and aaaaah at. I believe MAAST will have more members because of the show.
We are all learning. No matter how smart or experienced.

Ok, so because it's happening right now, that makes it right? Instead of using their show to further the hobby and present a realistic experience, they use it to encourage people to continue making the same stupid mistakes.

How about not using the excuse "everybody else is doing it"? I don't care if everyone else is doing it, it does not make it right.

I'm not defending them, but it is what it is. That's American TV for you. I do what I can by being here and other forums trying to give good advise and steer people in the right direction when they seek guidance. Not sure what else we can do. The best we can do is hope that if the shows sparks somebodies interest they use their resources and try to learn more by reaching out to communities like ours. Anybody feel like starting a public access show? It would take me a year to film a build and put it in an episode.

Mr Saltwater interviewed Brett last year...basically said, we're filming a tv show, if you want to educate people, make your own show.

Slightly off topic........

"if you want to educate people, make your own show"

then, someone tell me why they are going to be present at MACNA, which is our EDUCATIONAL conference?

We can go around and around on this, and there will always be two sides. Unfortunately, there will always be idiots like them who are willing to put animals or people at risk to boost their own ego.

Maybe you should give them a piece of your mind there :P You can be our collective voice.

That would probably be a very bad idea . I'm not tactful on the best of days, but when I'm aggravated, it's never a pretty thing.

Besides, I can't be a collective voice for anything. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Totally agree with you Sherita.... I don't think people realize how dangerously close this hobby is to becoming a thing of the past, particularly with wild caught specimens. We should all be good stewards to this hobby, its already got enough blackeyes we don't need more. All we need is one strong leftist group to target this industry and it could drastically change everything.

Attention to something is good when its used to educate not just to Ohhh Ahhh....This isn't an inanamate object...These are living creatures....

I have had a lot of people ask me, at work and other places, "Hey man, do you watch that show tanked? I bet you do." So I do supposed it has grown curiosity for the hobby. Whether that is a good or bad thing is for you to decide.

So what i am getting from this is i need to stock up on fish and corals cause as soon as some crazy activist groups gets the idea to come after the hobby, fish and corals will be a million dollars or impossible to find... Great.

I agree though. Just like getting a cat or a dog. You are taking responsibility for its well being and care.

I got into the hobby right after nemo came out. I didn't see the rush, but Jason's dad (AD) told me how they couldn't keep blue hippos and clown fish in the store. In through the back, out through the front, they were selling so fast.

Probably be another push with the new movie coming out. Nothing like hollywood to make something popular. Can't wait until they make a movie about tall people. :)

My brain took this statement and went

blue>allan>smurf> WRONG

I hate it when my brain plays word association.

Tony, if you are going to get a blue allan, you better get yourself a lot bigger tank.
