View Full Version : 29g BioCube HQi Nano MP40 build
Mr Cob
Fri, 10th Aug 2012, 06:09 PM
Ordered a 29g Biocube HQi nano today from TT on store credit. Man it's so much easier to purchase something on store credit.
Will be in next week. This will be my temp tank until we purchase a home for my black clown pair and some of my corals.
Going to run my MP40w ES on this tank for circulation.
MODS:
-Switch pump out to a Maxijet 1200
-Add a Truelumens LED actinic strip to MH
-Add a fan to the hood
Stand and Canopy design that Ace drew up:
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/projects/robstandcanopy.jpg
It will be painted a gloss white and drilled on top for fans. The entire canopy will lift up. Should be pretty cool.

Looks nice. Does seem like it could get hot with that MH. How big of a bulb does it take?
Mr Cob
Fri, 10th Aug 2012, 06:34 PM
lol, thx for the encouragement!
I owned one before and we keep the house rather cool...cooler than most. I would hit about 82 at the peak of a 6 hour light cycle, but I also ran two koralia pumps. With a vortech I'm hoping to remedy the 82 peak to 81 peak. Guess we'll see.
The MH is 150w and I selected a 20k bulb.

Can anyone suggest a fan to suck air out of the canopy? I'd like one that I don't have to splice, cut etc...

Something like that one..
Altex has them. I don't know if it will pull enough air, but I don't see why not. Aslong as you have one as a intake and the other as a exhaust..
I used this one on top of my aqua pod..

Nice Rob! Looks as if I started a trend with that design (stand and open top trim attached via the back). Although yours looks as if it will have more of a classic versus modern look with the traditional trim accents. I got to see Ace's in person and it looks sweet.
Look forward to your build. MP 40 in that small tank, going to pack a punch for sure.
Mr Cob
Thu, 16th Aug 2012, 03:09 PM
Thanks Ray, actually it came from one of Ace's older designs seen below. I really like the white too...nothing like any of my other setups which is what I think I'm most excited about. Yeah, the MP40 is definitely overkill and will be turned way down but I have it and I don't want to get rid of it because I can use it on a future build.

Nice, reminds me of mine. Just not so fancy with the trim pieces. I guess one has got to remember hes built a FEW stands/canopies over the years. Designs are bound to be similar. He has built a number of things for me now. You and your fish/corals are going to be happy campers. Let see if you have H2O in yours before mine, man im moving at a snails pace.

Just a few lol! I sent Ace a pic of your tank and the one I posted above which is in his portfolio of designs I like :P
I'll be up rather fast unless I decide to put in an artificial backdrop. I'm still undecided. I was thinking a foam background and part of the left side where I plan to put the MP40...in order to hide it. Not sure if I feel like messing with foam this time around.
RayAllen
Thu, 16th Aug 2012, 03:40 PM
I did the foam thing once, and it was ok to say the least.
As far as hand made background, this guys FOLWR has always impressed me. PVC, Eggcrate, dry rock, zip ties etc... Check it out. May give you some inspiration.

I enjoyed building the rock facades with the mortar and eggcrate.
In the future I plan on getting plenty of rubble rock and shelf pieces. Nothing like trying to make what little rock you have cover that area that you've envisioned.

More proof of how crazy Ace is....crazy FAST that is. This thing is looking solid! The stand is 42"...the tank bottom sits at 42" tall. because of this Ace came up with a cool design that will allow the entire canopy to be raised on hinges which will allow me to get in and out of the tank without having to worry about reaching over a lip or parts of the canopy.

OK, See I did not realize the canopy was closed on top. I was thinking it was open and just sat around the trim. Love the locking hinges and how far it opens!
go for the foam dude, you clearly no how to use it. I do like that you can be creative with it and paint to match the rock and texture.

Mr Cob
Fri, 17th Aug 2012, 11:21 AM
I use black pond foam...no need to paint it. I also use a stick and poke at it to keep it from making big fluffy poop looking mounds. My 85g build thread documents the entire process to include materials, images and vids

I will most likely remove the covers over the back chambers unless I install a fan in one. I have an LED light that I'm thinking about mounting to the back for the fuge...I really haven't gotten this far yet since I have yet to really see the tank and play with it to be clear on what I want to do. The hood isn't really a hood anyways...more like a trim with the exception to the lid pieces that cover the back chambers.

Correct, it's a trim with top covers over the back chambers. It does come with a custom fitted piece of glass to put over the open area...but obviously I won't be using that.

Made a few decisions over the weekend in regards to this tank. I spent a lot of time just staring at it after I picked it up from Ace on Sunday.
So, after much thought I decided to run a sump on this, I have an old nano sump that I got from Joelb awhile back, I've been using it as my top-off container on the 85g; intake and live rock in first chamber, hole will be plugged up, refugium with macro only in second chamber and return on the last chamber.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8023/7256122350_4a7cb5b6f3.jpg
Overflow: I will be using an Eshopps Nano HOB overflow in the 3rd chamber of the BioCube.
Skimmer: CPR Backpak, got this from Justin a few years ago... It fit perfect on the back of the first chamber of the BioCube. It's one of those skimmers I just could never get rid of because it worked so well. The pump sits in the first chamber and the return outputs to the second chamber.
Fans: I have 2 radioshack 3" fans on a 12volt ac/dc adapter, very quiet, that will pull air from inside the canopy and both will push the air out, the back of the canopy is open.
Background: Wife picked me up a can of black pond foam so I guess I'm foaming lol. I don't want anything thick though so probably just going to do a thin layer to get some texture on the background. I will also install a piece of blue acrylic and foam around some of it to give the appearance of depth and the deep ocean. Pretty much the only way I could think to get some blue on the back black glass. I'm also going to foam most of the bottom and leave a small section in the front for sand, will have to kind of block it in to fight off the MP40.
More pics as these things play out. Just trying to make sense of it all in my head right now.

Mon, 27th Aug 2012, 09:53 PM
ok...quick update on a couple mods:
Skimmer: HOB CPR Bak Pak 2...had to dremel out a small plastic notch from the light mount in order for it to fit and level part of the plastic lip for the skimmer to sit level. I actually ran this skimmer on my 140g half circle for awhile..lol, it really is a good skimmer.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8424/7877248666_7c69407318.jpg
Return/Overflow: Return pump will be a Rio 1700 with a 5' head to travel along with a couple 90 degree angles, thinking this should work well for me, not looking for a lot of flow from the return since I'll be running an MP40.

I also installed a piece of blue acrylic with aquarium sealant. Pretty much the only way I could think of to get some color in the background to resemble the ocean.

So in an effort to make the MP40 work without blowing sand everywhere I built my rock structure around it with the thought that I could at least get some sand in the front. The rest is black pond foam coated with aragonite sand and live rock...well dead now lol.
The rock structure is made up of 4 rocks held up by an acrylic rod which has also been foamed for added stability.
The MP40 will sit at the lower 30-40% left side wall...towards the back of the tank.

THANKS guys! I'm pretty happy with it, would have done a tighter smaller rock structure if I didn't have the MP40 but decided to keep the back completely open for flow. I love the stand and canopy combo too.. love Ace's work and my wife's finish.
Looks good Rob. Gives me some good ideas. I finnally got the 70 I got from you resealed and the stand rebuilt and painted. Where do you get the foam at ?
Tim, the foam can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot. I had a couple cans laying around from my last foam job, wasn't sure if they would still be good or not after a couple of years.
Black pond foam or waterfall foam, they both can be found in their pond sections where they have the ponds, pumps etc. Make sure it's black and it would pay to call ahead because sometimes they will be out and other times they'll have 10 cans. About $13 a pop. I used 2 cans, one on the back wall and one on the bottom...the extra went into the structure. Be sure to use aquarium sealant under the foam. Apply sealant...spread it around then add the foam while the sealant is still fresh. This will make the foam stick longterm and it can still be scraped off later if it's not desired.
*note...poke the foam with a stick when applying to keep it from bubbling up otherwise you will have mounds of smooth foam...not very realistic looking. WHile foam is wet...add aragonite sand to give it texture.

I believe it's fiji pink aragonite... I pretty much collect sand and rock, two things I learned to never sell. I got about an inch of a sand bed in there. Enough to keep me happy. I love the look of sand but wasn't sure how I was going to pull it off with the MP40. Guess we'll see.

Been a crazy last week on this system.
I hate plumbing. Had a few leaks in my plumbing overflow and return plumbing. Overflowed the sump twice due to the difficulty of leveling out the reverse syphon when pumps turn off.
I finally realized that by having the HOB Skimmer in the first section it was draining the display and keeping the overflow back section full which kept the overflow filling up. Solution... put the skimmer and return pump on the same DJ Power supply switch.
Been wet for close to a week now.
Skimmer is starting to pull and water is starting to smell.

Some good news and kind of surprising.. the tank has not raised one degrees in temp with the light on for 8 hours with open canopy and for the last 4 hours with the canopy closed. I really think the sump, large stand and canopy with open back, plus the fans and the fact that the tank is over 5" off the wall is allowing the entire system to have nice air flow.
Temp is running stable just one degrees higher than the house temp.
House temp is at 73f.
Obviously I will adjust the system's temp higher via the heater. Think I might shoot for 76. That will give me plenty of room for potential errors. I just wanted to see how it ran first before setting the heater.

A pair of 3" 12v DC fans I picked up from Radioshack. Ace gave me a 9volt cell phone adapter to run both but I switched to a 12v to kick them up a notch. They are louder with the 12v but keeping the tank super cool. I may switch back to the 9volt adapter to see how that works because they were almost dead silent.
I still can't believe that I have zero temp swings with a MH light on over this nano and in a canopy! I was expecting at least a 2 degrees swing even with the fans on.
This system is running as if I'm using a chiller.

totally man, the tall stand too...since the water is traveling through it for the sump. Also, Ace.. I would have installed the fans with one blowing down and one up but went with your suggestion to have both blowing the air up and out of the canopy. Thanks.

nano + MP40 = awesomeness!
I took the vortech off the 85g lastnight and put it on the 29g. I was going to wait a little longer since I needed it for my corals until this tank was cycled but I just couldn't wait any longer. I was itching to find out.
Me like.
Me fan of vortech again.
Finally this pump is running the way I feel it should be... minimal noise and a nice fat wave splashing back and forth :) Just a shame I had to run it on a 29g and turned down to 60% in order to get a quiet running pump.
Whatever though, I'm stoked.

Thu, 6th Sep 2012, 03:08 PM
yeah, I'm certain.
The things are loud when on short pulse mode and turned up. Maybe it's like a car...just because the speedometer says it can go 140mph doesn't mean you run it at 140...?
My first hand experience with vortechs... 2 MP10's es, 1 MP40 es, then Jack's MP40 es, Harish's MP10es... all are the same. They all humm...hiss... and make this sound when at 70%+ on short pulse mode: "waer........waer........waer.......waer.......waer" x infinity" lol
Very quiet in the other modes. And, yes if they are not aligned correctly they make all kinds of noise, not sure how anyone could even run the pumps if they are not aligned correctly. Reminds me of car with transmission problems.
Anyways, finally happy with a vortech pump on a 29g tank.
Mr Cob
Thu, 6th Sep 2012, 03:14 PM
and...if I turn the MP40 up over 60% then it makes the same exact noise as it did on my 85g. The vortech pumps just don't hack it on short pulse mode at full capacity. Turn them down and they are great.

IMO, the MP40 is a littel much for a 29 g tank. I would get and MP10. That would be perfect for your tank. I have an MP10 in my 30 g cube tank and the flow is as below. It is perfect for S. gigantea which, IMO, is one of the most flow demand of all the animals we keep in our tank.

so a mp-40 is too big for a 29 but your big gigantea in 30g some would say is too big for a 30g lol (just pulling your leg) but he can always get a bigger tank and use the mp-40 on it.
that gig is the healthiest one I've seen in a while by the way good job.
Mr Cob
Sat, 8th Sep 2012, 05:50 AM
lol Chris.
Yeah Orion, of course the MP40 is overkill if running it at 100%...which is not my intention. I'm not really concerned with getting the most out of the MP40 or MP10...I already did that on my 85g and I can't stand vortechs running at full capacity. I like short pulse mode and the noise is seriously disturbing in that mode at higher capacities. Running the MP40 at 60% is not that bad on the ear though and I love the wave I'm getting.
Point is... if I run an MP10 I will run it at 100% short pulse mode and the noise will be too loud for my liking.. which I know because I ran 2 MP10s synced on my 85g before the MP40 and they drove me nutts.
I even got a dislike on my vid, mean people, what's to dislike? It's a nano with an MP40. Isn't this Texas? Maybe the dislike was from someone in another state...like a really small state. lol

While I think the size of the mp40 in a small tank looks funny I think it would actually give a better flow pattern. I have also ran both the 10 and a 40 on a 30g tank. The larger "spread" of the 40 moved more water at a lesser flow rate and Rob you're correct that you don't have that humming on short pulse by running it a lower speed. I never noticed it until I had the tank at work where the atmosphere was a little quieter.
Tank is looking good so far by the way.

Thanks, John. I placed the 40 on the left side of the tank which is the side that faces away from the living room so the pump isn't much of an eye sore. In the tank I made sure there was foam on the back wall where it was placed so that it would not stick out like a sore thumb. I'm happy and just playing the waiting game now.
I still have some equipment tweaks to do in the stand and cable management.

The drain hose is flush on the inside. That would drive me nutts...the HOB overflow has some noise that is starting to irriatate me but I read online about adding a small pvc line in side the drain to silence it. Fuge light is a wave point LED that Tony mentioned below.

Sand bed is 6". You got it on the fuge light. I really like it, great for growing macro, housing a few frags and gives off a nice ambient light in the stand. Actually have been spending my time staring down there versus the tank. lol Considering adding a couple sea horses to the first fuge area with the DSB. I have really slow flow going through the entire sump.

for the sump/fuge it's perfect, for me anyways. Might be a bit too blue for most people's taste in a display tank though. I prefer it in the stand versus the 65k type options for lighting a fuge...just makes looking under the stand ugly, but with this 50/50 I love staring into the stand now.

Ya with me it's just a space issue.... The 5k cfl flood lamp that's down there is doing its job and then some... It's just the space under my stand is limited and the bulb sits a inch off the water, not good. But it grows caulpera and chaeto like crazy.. The led should take up way less space, just wasn't sure about how good how good of a job it will do with my macro...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8439/7978431567_d88c556c10_z.jpg
..my thought is that it will also serve as a place to hold the wet pump during container switch out and anything wet while performing tank chores such as a wet pump from water changes. Guess we will see, I kind of wanted to have a stand built for it so that I could store misc items under it but we'll give this a go. Plenty of room in this stand to add a shelf of some sort.

This system was set up using my existing tank water, live rock and live sand plus macro but there was some new sand and new rock used. I had a small cycle that leveled out within two weeks. Would have liked to have waited about a month but it was on once I saw the cyano. lol

I have fed tangs the dragon's breath algae and agree with both above...when feeding nori every other day they didn't mess with it too much but without nori they would jam out on it.

Slow grower for me. I think I got it earlier this year, he came over and we traded some stuff. I remember him going on about how awesome this frag was. I do like it a lot, but I have it too far from the glass to see it well.
As of just a moment ago...

Got a few updates...
- Switched the MP40 out and traded for an MP10 along with some coral (I'm very happy with downgrading to the MP10... while the 40 was nice it was just a lot of pump in the water and was standing out too much) Thx Mark!
- Added my phosban reactor
- Started dosing 2.5ml of H2o2 (hydrogen peroxide 3%)... on day 3 of a 7 day plan, corals look great, water is clear and micro algae is slowing down. I had a bad dyno and hair algae problem break out in my 85g and some of the frags are in this sytem now so this is an attempt to control it before it becomes an issue.
- traded a few more frags :) thx Jeremy!
- re-worked the rock again, mainly just moved the top rock out to open up more room for SPS growth
First up...tank shots: (nevermind the frag racks... I only use them for acclimating new corals and then they are out in a few days)

Phosban reactor (kent), if you ever buy a kent reactor just save yourself the time and re-seal it, mine salt creep leaked in several places so I re-sealed it at every possible place and it's solid now. Still need to swap out the clear tubing for solid black tubing to prevent algae growth

With that said I decided to chop the clowns home up (the pagoda cup, first ever fragging session on this coral in 3+ years) with the hopes that they would be houseless and move into the RBTA. As I was doing that I got a little frag happy and jammed out on the Tyree War Coral and MCC Ice War Coral. lol This tank is crowded now.

Clowns dropped some eggs off in the nano between 10/09 and 10/10. Just documenting the date. I picked this pair up over a year ago as small juveniles.
This is their first clutch of eggs. It also came just a few days after adding a small 10k led to the back fuge that spills light over into the main display...kind of reminds me of the moon. Also just added 4 anemones and they took to one. First time I have seen them in an anem.

Been awhile since I have updated this thread. Some will be disappointed with this update but I have taken a new path in the hobby and have started breeding clownfish. As a result I traded out all of my corals to fund new broodstock and equipment.
I will add a few pics of the new broodstock systems for curious minds but will keep this thread going as this tanks progresses. I'm uncertain of the direction I will take with this tank now. At the moment I'm planning all RBTA...but I may go back to reef.
For now this system is holding my spawning black ice pair. I think I would like to move the pair into my broodstock system once my other pairs are spawning because once I move them they will most likely stop spawning for a month or two and I would like to be able to keep rolling with collecting larvae...so I will need other pairs to pull from.

Well, now that my clownfish project has all that it needs I'm going to start getting this tank back on track since I traded or sold off practically all of the coral that I had in this tank.
I have no idea on the direction of this tank...will just freestyle it.
I came across a few clams in a recent trade of some of the fish I decided not to keep. At the moment I'm liking clams and anything that moves.
