Hey everyone,
recently moved to Texas and live in Seguin.
ive had a reef tank since I was about 13. I been out of the loop for the last 2 years or so, and am ready to jump back in.
I brought some small left over tanks and equipment out here with me like a custom truvu10g and a 3g nano. I have the 3g nano set up with a 70w mh that is just cycling.
but today I got a new tank!!

Well New to me. Its a 3 sided blue tank with an angled front, all-in-one tank.
its a sea clear tank with a precision marine aio sump. Even a skimmer.

I build custom cabinets, so I'm going to build the tank into a cabinet with book cases.
here is a pic of the tank. I have to draw up the design for the cabinet and do some measurement.

Gallons unknown on the tank, will measure it out.

If you want a very blue bulb with high par values try the phoenix 14k. That bulb is very very bright and the blue on it is awesome.

Just need to build the doors, drawer boxes and stain it. Should have doors and drawer fronts done today. Do u guys think I should do flush inset or a standard overlay cabinet?

Enjoy!

Very nice, Are you planning to have a sump? if so what size? If yes you might want to leave room for that. just MO

No sump, if u look at the OP all see its built in. If I want a sump I still have enough room for a 15-20g sump.

Excellent work, man does it pay to have a the right tools and the skills. Big stand for a small tank, but makes for a nice display.

That was the point. I got tired of just a stand and a hood, so now its a book shelf, drawers and more cabinet space. So rather than just having the tank as a display, the whole stand/cabinet is a display.

Its almost done!
All doors r made, just basic hardwood plank doors, drawer fronts r in the clamps right now and will be ready to go tomorrow.
All thats left is to install the drawer hardware, build drawer boxes and clear coat it.

Doors on
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3/yamaha_dan/IMG_20120808_124008.jpg
And stained
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3/yamaha_dan/IMG_20120808_155250.jpg

U can see in the last 2 pics whats going on. Where its stained inside will be open and used as a book shelf.
the center opening will be for the tank, above it is the light.

Got a few questions for u guys,
I'm going to paint the opening where the tank and lights go. Whats a good paint that will hold up to saltwater?
Also for my return pump? This thing is like 20-25 gallons. So I'm not sure what size pump to get.
and lastly, flow. I want an mp10 but thats a lot of $$. Have any other new power heads come out? I was at precision marine last week and I saw some marinelife maxijet400 but u can choose the sure flow or as an actual powerhead.
thanks!

Daniel

I had the maxi 400 pro and never liked it, it's flow is very awkward and the length of the unit hinders aquascaping and is just plain ugly. Look into a few Koralia nanos or maybe a koralia 1.

I used kilz primer and a dockside paint from west marine here in town... some say the primer is enough though....

It is a strange tank, but I fell in love with it. I wanted something different and this was perfect!
I wanted to.do.something to test my skill. I designed it and built it and finished it.
Its in the center of my living room and kitchen so it will be the center of attention.

Not up and running yet, but a couple new updates.
I put handles and knobs on the drawers and doors, as well as 2 500gph jbj powerheads with controller.
should be going this weekend.
BUT, I'm still not sure on a fuge. I kinda had an idea of getting 2 small tanks built with the same angle and putting them on each side of the tank. They will be display fuges. Not sure on the idea yet, but if I do it will be down the line.
what r ur guys opinion on filtering this thing?

If you did a macro lagoon on one side and a frag tank on the other side it would be awesome!!!

Tie them all together and let the good times roll!

Macro doesn't need a ton of light. A little 10k led wave point clip on would be great. Grows the heck outta mine. You can use a par38 bulb on the frag side. LEDs will help keep it all cooler. :)

Hey so that 10k is growing your macro pretty good? I was thinking about that fixture but wasn't sure if I should.. Everything is happy with the 5K cfl except me...

Its been awhile!
Quick update, ive gotten a couple fish and done a couple other things.
My fiance wanted a fish and bought a total impulse buy, a tomato clown. Im not a fan of fish, but I hate clowns (except hybrids and maroons)
So if anyone wants a tomato clown he is free for the taking.
I also got a blenny. I dont know what kind, but i like him and I dont have to see him all the time since he stays in his hole and camouflage.
I also got a new Phoenix 150w bulb so its ready to stock it with some killer looking sps and clams.
I have 1 clam now about 2 1/2". I didn't expect him to make it since the store I got him from had no lights on him and was getting chomped by fish, they were asking 30 but i got it for $10. I just wanted that thing out of there tank. My tank was young too., just finished cycling.
But he is very happy and very well and completely healed.
I also made one chamber in the back a fuge and it is THRIVING.
already have reproducing pods.

Will take pics later, just did a water change.

All in all its ready to go, I need a fan to get the heat out and a larger air pump for my skimmer. After that, all the tank money will be for coral!

Ps, anyone have any nice coral they wanna sell? I need small colonies since my girl doesn't like frags(which is a good thing)

Update.
i havnt been working much so the tank is pretty bare. I have a couple(2) sps, a clam and a trumpet.
we also went to the coast and got some hermits. The tank is doing great and thriving.
not sure the future of this tank. Looks like we r moving back to our home state in June.

Are hermit crabs from the coast reef safe? I've heard some bad experiences with fish from the coast, I'd be careful.

Ya, I got them off port aransas. They seem great so far. Keep everything extremely clean. They haven't touched my clam, lps or sps. They r weird. One day u will see them running around than the next day they will all be gone, look in the sand tucked under the lr I can see them wedged in and they just hang out for a few days. Than they will come out a couple days later.
