couple weeks ago me and my wife spotted a Achilies Tang at louis just before we were going on vacation and she said she liked the fish and i didnt pay attention since we were leaving next day... any how saw that fish again yesterday at louis when i went their to pick up some salt...That fish is very tempting and she may even be sold by now..well my concern is that fish is a about 7" in length ...how long of a tank this adult tang needs to stay active and healthy???..
how many of u hve successfully kept 7 to 8" long adult tangs in 6ft tank..
also i hve read achilies r known to be very sensitive and prone to several disease..
right now i house a 4" blk tang and 4" purple tang and they both get along fine

Lucky,

Buy the fish, I have plenty of room and you can visit anytime. :)

nooo. stop. It is hard to bring in a new tang. The other tangs will tear it up.
You may have to pull the other tangs in another tank for a week, maybe more than place in with the other tang.

If the new tang gets injured you will have to quarantine and stress itself may kill the tang.
If you dont quarantine you may lose several fish. An injured fish will get sick fast.

Sometimes you have to jump tanks to get it to work.
Somebody else may have experienced something else.
just my thoughts

Shane!!!

He was about to get me a tang!

Just kidding though. That purple is a dominant species, isn't it?

No experience with the purple. That beauty is expensive.

You well always have a tank boss..but if the new tang is larger then the others it helps a lot..my yellow was the boss..but now that i put a purple tang a lil bigger, it really didn't bug it as much..i would get it..lol its way bigger then the rest..

Yea I know their shouldnt be any aggression problem from my small purple and blk tang bc this Achilles is really big ...my concern is the size of tank I hve ...I am still not fully convinced that this 6ft long tank is enough for for 7" mature tang

i have a customer with a 215 and she has i would guess 10 or so tangs 3 or so are about 6-7 inchs her achilies is about 5-6 inch and her orange shoulder ,sailfin and sohol 6-7 they all do just fine the only thing i find odd is some fish just dont grow for the life of them while others have grown alot

I know from personal experience that Achilles Tangs are bold and bossy fish. They can be like Powder Blue Tangs, but a bit more on the meaner side. You will see what I mean if you buy it. They are very beautiful, too.

I think it will do fine in your size tank as long as there is enough room for it to swim. The key to successfully keeping an achilles is finding a healthy specimen. They are very delicate and require pristine water. A UV sterilizer will help with ich. Since it is larger it will likely be the boss of the tank. I kept one in an 8 foot 240g along with a pbt, yellow tang, and purple tang. The pbt and achilles would always chase each other around. Nothing serious. The yellow and purple always stayed away from the achilles.

These tangs are in huge schools, in the wild. They are difficult to keep, and very, very bold and territorial, once established. They should really be the only aggressive tang in the tank. Having had a Sohol from heck, these guys can be even worse. My Sohol killed or tried to kill every big fish in the tank. Killed a Powder Blue with one blow.
