View Full Version : Acclimating corals to LEDs?? NEW PICS pg.6

I am in no rush..... But I scooped up a used set of Ai'S, not what I initially wanted but figured it would be the cheapest way to dip into LEDs.

They will be about 11" AWL, AI recommends 12". I am hoping to borrow a par meter measure where my current lighting is at and match it.

Any suggestions? I've read a bunch online these past few days but want to get some local feedback if anyone has any...

Also is it okay to have the heat sinks flush with the top of the canopy? I cut holes out for them to barely be exposed through the top but should I lift them a bit to raise the heat sink out of the top?

You ever get word on how to properly acclimate them?

350gt
Tue, 1st May 2012, 11:19 AM
Nope......

Well other sites have been useful.....

I did raise them about a inch out the top of the canopy, that way the heat sinks are getting good flow. I got the inside painted and last night did my 1st coat of stain..... Came out alright I guess, seeing it was my first time staining....

Today I am going to match it up to my tank, if they are close, I will start mounting everything up..

I think ppl are bleaching there corals by turning them up too much and too long to start.... I might throw as many corals as I can on the sand bed while I acclimate the lights to the tank, it will be unsightly but better than bleaching everything....

I still might add some more LEDs Or 1 t5 to help with the spectrum if I am not completely happy.....

Yeah. I snagged a single AI Sol unit. I am scared to put it on my tank. All my sps is growing amazing under my MH's. I don't want that to stop. I am only putting it over one section of my tank. Will be putting some tester frags under it first to see how they do. Then migrate the rest. I would hate to loose any pieces. If it pans out. I am probably going to get some more units and accent with the magenta stunner strips for the reds. And then a Reef Keeper. Cause my rats nest of a wiring setup under my tank is killing me.

350gt
Tue, 1st May 2012, 01:10 PM
What size tank? Cause the stunners didnt do much on my 110....

koa25

I have a 125 gallon. Not looking to get growth from the stunners. Just looking for the magenta to make the reds and yellows pop a little more.

Thought about doing that aswell.... But I think Im just going to ramp them up slowly so they adjust to it..

The stunners wouldn't even penetrate deep enough in my tank.... You would have to have them 1" off the water to notice a thing..... That's why I went panoramas..

Tue, 1st May 2012, 01:52 PM
Oh and congrats on the AI.
Alot of ppl hate them, some like them...

I didn't really care for them at first... I initially wanted the maxspects, but didn't want to stick 5 or 6 units over my tank and find out they are not enough... But I really liked them..

Then it was the radians, which I really liked but the reviews on them are horrible. There par readings wether legit or not weren't that great either.... But the color spectrum and spread is what I liked... I was set on them either way cause spectrum is what I was after..... But nobody had them I stock, if they were I would have been prepping this tank with them....... When I went to pick up my Ai'S they had 4 in stock at the aqua dome in austin..... I just stared at them, cause they are on back order every where else.....

Thought about scooping them up to decide which I liked better but the wifey wouldn't have been very happy..... Lol

350gt
Tue, 1st May 2012, 01:59 PM
Its all good though, if they don't work out for me.... I will scrap them for something else....

Thats what this hobby is all about...... Trial and error.. Isn't it?

koa25
Tue, 1st May 2012, 02:29 PM
I wish I could drop that kind of change and then turn around and scrap it ha ha. But this is true. It's all about finding out what fits you and makes you happy with your tank. While not killing the stuff in your tank. But appreciated. Let me know how your stuff does. I'm curious. I might be going home tonight to add it on. If in a couple days i'm on here selling a AI you'll know why. At least it was only one unit. I wanted to go radions as well. I wanted the full spectrum thing too. But 750 a unit? Plus the penetration on them is not amazing.I have a 24 inch tank. It was measured at 70-120 at 25 inches if i remember. No too horrible but for the price it should be better. And that is at center as well.

350gt
Tue, 1st May 2012, 02:38 PM
If u need more spread, you can always swap optics... I think they come half 40 and half 70... But you can order all 70 if you want all spread...

I found this nice link about the spread.... It's on my desktop and will post it when I get home....

Hey if your still set on stunners, teeb had 2 for sale on here... Magenta too..... I still say it won't be enough for our size tanks but will save you some $$ if you want to find out first hand..

koa25
Tue, 1st May 2012, 02:55 PM
That link will be appreciated. I know about the optics. Would prefer a better spread from it so I can maybe get away with three over my tank and have the SPS right under it. But I will see how this guiene pig unit does first. Not commited yet. I remember seeing those. Im broke at the moment. Between this unit and some coral and rent. I picking lint out of my pockets. But if they are still there in a couple weeks I might have to hit him up then.

congrats on the LEDs. Heat rises so cutting the holes in the canopy is the right thing to do. Do the AIs have any fans to hit the heatsinks?
If not I would throw a small external fan kooling the heatsinks. Im interested how theyll work for you. The controllers are kool too.

Well i am attempting 3 over my 60"

So let see how that goes....

Most ppl rush it, I am in no rush at all.... Could careless if they go up today or tomorrow....

But I think I know how I will have my optics laid out...

The 2 on each side I will have the 70s over the high spots on the rocks, just to be safe and not burn anything... I am sure they will get adequate lighting, then the 40s over the sand bed to be able to get the light to my chalices on the floor...

Only thing I am sure about is the one in the center....Should I do all 40s or 70s? As I have a glass center brace and will it be a waste to try and get the light through it....

I was thinking maybe 4 40s in the center and 2 40s on each side of that to help blend in with the other 2 units.....

Yea each unit has its own fan....

The controller in my opinion are as plain and simple as they come... Would be even better if I could wirelessly control them from my iPhone, iPod or Ipad..... Even from a pc like the radians.... Now that is a nice way to program your lightS....

You could always throw in 2 Radions between the AI's if you want the color so bad. My MCC Red Welso Blastos have always looked amazingly Red from the get go and it's going on 8 months. Been thinking of removing 1 AI and replacing it with 2 Raidons just to see what it does. I believe my New Profilux 3 Ex can handle all 5 of them and ramp them all correctly.

You can control them with the apex controller and an Iphone if you have the net device for it. Seen a couple people that can do that when they hooked the AI's up to their controllers. And the pc software for profilux can do the same thing.

Nice, glad to see you gave the AI's a chance. I started mine off low, around 40/25/30 and added 5% every few days until I reached the desired intensity. I've had no problems going that route.

After looking at the Radion's, they just looked too washed out, and not worth double the price IMO. The spectrum is cool, but my reds are doing just fine under the AI's. I wouldn't worry too much about spread, they definitely cover a good area when you get them up high enough and they put out more than enough intensity.

Keep us posted and let us know how you like them.

Appreciate the link. I like the idea of alternating the lens for the third setup on there instead of having all four of the 40 lens in the center. I might have to give that a shot before I swap out for all 70 degree lenses. Lights are looking nice. Lets get some Tank shots up. Don't get lazy on us now. What are you running the intensities at for each color? Details

No prob.....

I actually laid my optics out based on my rock work.... 70's over the high sspots on the rock and the 40s over the sand bed.... I am hoping that works...

I copied a setting I found online and just tweaked it too follow my current light cycle.... But my mid day is something like 40w 35b 35 rb, that's the highest it goes then ramps down....

Lmk if u want to try swapping optics I have a few left..

Will do. I staggered the optics right now.

70/40/70/40
40/70/40/70

I'll see how that works first and then I might hit you up for the optics. Hopefully this breaks up the spotlighting effect but still give me that punch.

The tank is look pretty sweet. I like it. Keep us posted on what the corals are doing. I still have yet to put mine on my tank. I put it over my ten gallon to mess with it cause I had to atleast play with it and its pretty cool. I had the lightening mode on for a bit the other night. That was pretty cool. Thought i was going to have a seizure.

350gt
Thu, 3rd May 2012, 08:49 AM
Lol, the thunderstorm mode was cool the first time..... It just freaks out the fish and I leave it off..

I spent a good hour before bed redoing my settings..... I hate that in order to program it, the lights adjust while doing so..... My fish were tripping out last night, poor things didn't know of it was daylight or not.... Lol they kept coming out like "hell ya" then would go back in when I adjusted another setting...... Lol

I wish you could adjust it offline then plug it up... But it was cool getting to see what the spectrum looked like while adjusting..... At the fishes expense though....

I have no spotlighting at all.... I am getting full tank coverage and these things are bright...

OK i was bored a minute ago and instead of ruining threads, I took some pics........

I think I found a setting the corals are liking..... going to leave it like this and from now on bump them a little every month...

I tested them with a par meter at 100% and it should be just about where I would want the light.... there highest peak is at 55% for two hours right now and I think I will leave it that way, until I reach 100... I am getting okay readings at 55, so there is no problem leaving it there....

I could lower them and get monster #'s but like I said, the numbers are good with the 3 units sitting 12" AWL..... and the spread is good.... i dont want to try and fix what isnt broke...

Eitherway so I took these pics and went back to try and find some pics I have took in the past. I found a couple I took a month ago.....

It may not look like much......

But these leds were underpowered while acclimating...... they have been brought up to give good numbers just last week or so..... So I am pretty stoked what I will see in a few weeks or months....

I can see a little growth, not much but some and polyp extension has never been better........ I think by next month, I will get much better growth.

Yeah. I had a couple KIAs with the sols. They didn't survive the acclimation. All hard corals. I have the sol in the center of my tank over the softies. And got my MHs back up on the ends over the sps. They the ones still viable are bouncing back. I'd like to give them another go around. Eventually.

Pretty cool morph under the AI SOLS

A frag from ROB, I cant remember what it was called but he said it morphed to this colored under his Metal halides...

well 2 months later it morphs to this under my AI's

http://i712.photobucket.com/albums/ww125/gsrt5/IMG_3449.jpg

the frag is well off to the side of the tank, I tried on purpose to give it the least light without killing it...

I am working on some updated pics as well.... Just trying to get the angles right..

this past weekend as a gift to myself I added some T5s to aid in the spectrum department.

I dont know how ppl think AI's look good by themselves..... maybe my settings are wrong...

Eitherway, I was going to add a DIY led strips consisting of CYAN, UV and RED LEDs but not wanting to puzzle my brain anymore decided on 2 48" T5's. They are powered by a workhorse 5 ballast pushing a Ati purple plus and Ati actinic bulb with TEK reflectors. I have them on for only 6 hours and so far I like the color, might bump the blues on the Ais a bit more to dial in the right look..

Hi , I have never posted on this site before but I have had my a/i sols up for about 6 months and have to say it takes about 3 or 4 months for the corals to actually take to these lights. The colors and the growth become more and more as the time passes also the overall health of my sps seem better. I have 2 long ways over my 65g, Im just getting back to stable tank after adding bio pellets and the lights at the same time and ticking off my tank. I started too low on the % setting on my lights and almost killed alot of my corals. live and learn ,have them up to 100% on w,rb,b and sps 2" and 4" below the water with the lights 12" awl. good luck with the lights and dont give up it gets better.

Nice pics nub..

I hope in a few things start looking better..

Things havent been disasterous but a few corals have lost the bright color they had before....

I hear some are saying I have alot of stuff that I don't know how to use.... Wish those ppl would post instead of talking in secret...

I went with T5s as the AIs IMO and a bunch of others online are admitting they are lacking something..... Most are getting even better results with T5s which I went ahead and did, which I really didn't want too.... But things were looking very dull...... Even thinking I should have just went with the fuller spectrum but less power radians...

Ppl supplement MH's with t5s, why can't LEDs? There is a reason why the radians added green and red and the Vegas are coming out with every color in the rainbow. The Ai'S are lacking..

But in this hobby, you never know till u try.... If the t5s don't help out... Oh well.. I've spent more on other stuff I didn't need... But I haven't killed everything in my tank so apprarently I know a little on what I'm doing...

And I won't quit on these lights just yet..... I wasn't raised a quitter... Lol

No not browning or bleaching.... Just fading, especially my montis..

I had a SPS frag start bleaching but moved him to the sand bed and he's looking better..

When I had the ecoxotic LEDs on this tank all my coral colors popped now it just looks very bland, I didn't expect that with the Ai'S... I got my whites up to 60% now and bumped my blue an royal blue to 75% to try and bring back some color... I was liking the white look a little more and during my midday hours was keeping the whites a bit higher..

Man Tony, I all the color and frags I was loosing i was able to salvage most of them when I switched back to MH. I am probably going to do a softy dominated tank and use the AI i have over it. Softies seemed to respond really well to the AI's. Just not my hard corals. Glad to hear they are surviving though.

Believe me Jeremy... It was a little shock in the beginning... Almost everything was unhappy and I lost some stuff.... Not much but some....

But thanks.. I think the tank is bouncing back and feel in a few more months should be looking really good which is why I'm trying to stock up now..

Would I swap if my tank was running fine on metal halides and hundreds of dollars invested in coral...... Nope!!! I wouldn't want to risk losing all that stuff...

If it was a new tank or if like in my case wasn't really stocked up... Hell ya!!... I would sacrifice growth over the the benefits of led anyday..... I wasn't so sure in the beginning...

this was a test on LEDs.... If I didn't see inprovement or any kind of growth.... I would have dumped my LEDs for one of the best MH fixtures..

By the way did your t-5s make a big difference in the reds in your tank or overall color?

Man I forgot to take those shots.... I was going to then the mod bug got ahold of me and I swapped the true actinic and purple plus for a aquablue special and blue plus.... Idk why... They color wasn't as good...

So last week I swapped back to the actinic and purple plus... I really like the color.. When they are off you can definitely tell, looks real bland.... The actinic adds a purple hue, but is really unnoticeable when the AIs are at full blast but it highlights a few things.. The purple plus is more pink and adds a very nice touch to everything IMO.... Doesn't look bland at all...

I will try and get a full tank shot...

Once AI releases the upgrades for the SOL's I recommend going that route. I am extremely please with the coloration on the Vega.

You know I am really debating this.....

I mean what I have is working now, why change it....? I really want the Vegas though. I am thinking with the wider spectrum I can dump the t5s..... But I would hate what happened when switching to LEDs happen again.. I doubt it but I would hate to upset anything......

I will more than likely replace or upgrade though..... I can't resist.. Lol

You're more than welcome to come check them out if you're curious...

Thanks.. Might take u up on that offer when the upgrades become available...

Just curious if I can still mount them horizontally like they are now.. The fewer LEDs has me thinking..

I have mine mounted horizontally, but my tank is only 18" deep. With the 80 degree optics, AI claims that they will cover 24" x 24" I believe.

I have the 3 mounted horizontally at 12" awl, my tank is 60 across and I want to say depth is 24"... I get no spot lighting at that height... With them pushed to 100% I was getting good par readings, I want to say 200 at sand bed... I would like to lower them to get more punch but don't want to get spot lighting.... If I added a forth then I could lower them with no worries... Which I might do if I go Vegas.... Upgrade the 3 and buy one more unit....

I also have my optics arranged to my rock work, 70s over the high points and 40s to punch down to the sand bed....
