PH ponderance

So both my test kits read 8-8.2 on normal.
I've been trying to keep it up over 8.3 so I added some baking soda, and it actually went down!!!
So I tested the tap water which is 8.8...... added some baking soda to that, and it went way down quick!!!
any ideas here guys??

If your tapwater is reading 8.8 then there is something wrong with your test kit. Most tap water runs a lot lower than that in the low 7's. Unless you are on well water that is... I would double check your reading with someone elses kit. What brand are you using and how old is it?

I don't get it.
