I was looking for new return pump for tank and read all the great reviews regarding the Sicce Syncra Silent pumps. I figured I would give them a shot as I had some problems running my Eheim 1262 exernally. I picked up a 4.0 and am running it externally, mounted on the supplied rubber suction cups. It's runs my biopellet reactor and the return, all connected by vinyl tubing.

I got everything ready and plugged and it in. Wow, this thing moves water, lots of it. It replaced a Quiet One 4000 rated at 1017gph and even though it rated at ~60gph less, it moves significantly more water. My drain was barely able to keep up when there was no water diverting to the reactor. Very impressed with the flow.

Next reaction, holy crap, it sounds like I'm in a freaking helicopter. This is the noisiest pump I have ever used. I can hear it humming in my bedroom with the door closed. The room is over 20' away! I don't know if I got a dud or these just suck at being used externally. Hence the SPL joke for you audio guys.

Anyone else running one externally and having the same experiences?

I haven't used one external, but the few I have used seem to have a "break in" period then they made less noise. They are not silent pumps for sure, they do make noise but not too bad once they have a few hours of use

My Eheim was silent compared to this one, even the mag drives I have used are much quieter. I'm hoping it'll settle down or it's gonna have to go back.

I have 4 sicce syncras in my sump with no issue with noise my vortech is louder even with cabinet doors open. I have a 3 for return 1.0,1.5 for reactors and psk-600(sicce 2) skimmer. also a .5 for top off. I look at wattage and gph of a pump. low wattage equals less electricity and less heat.

maybe the noise is just a external plumbing thing compared to putting them in sump

Mine was Loud when I first hooked it up. I was using a big Aqueon pump for my return before the sicce. The aqueon was quiet but high wattage. Like Big_Pun said, the energy consumption matters. I switched to the sicce and my temp dropped two degrees. Loud or not, I kept the sicce.

tg8gxp assured me it would get quiet after a few days. I suppose it did, but it was still louder than my Aqueon, not quite as loud as a Mag though. When it was still bugging me, we got some shower liner at home depot and made some little mats to absorb the vibration. Mine's not external though.

Are you hearing the pump/motor itself, or vibration? I've read about people using an old mouse pad under external pumps to help with noise. (That's why I tried the shower liner - made a big enough difference to be worth the trouble.)

I'm not sure, it looks like it may be the plastic shroud on the front of it combined with other noise. Sounds like at least some of it is coming from the motor itself.
