I'm back to basics but it's good to be back! I just set up a super duper simple nano tank in my kitchen. It's a standard 10g tank with a Koralia 1, PC light with 2 bulbs that fit perfectly on top of the tank. Course sand, some dry rock that Jack was generous to give me. (Thanks Jack) I basically gathered up some extra equipment and came up with this. I'll eventually add an ATO because top offs will be frequent. I plan on putting mainly softies in it like shrooms, zoas's, paly's, and maybe some lps but im not sure yet. I am not running filtration on this im just using the powerhead to circulate the water and letting the LR and sand take care of the filtration part of it. Nutrient export will be weekly 10% to 15% water changes. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Alright here is update 1... So far since the start of the post I have made a few changes. I now have 2 HOB filters and I changed some of the rock around. The green rock is what was here originally and when I went to James' house to do a shoot he gave me the rock on the right side.

I did have a Chromis in the tank but unfortunately it either died and the hermits ate it or the anem I had got it. Either way it trashed the water quality and I had an algae bloom and a cyano or dyno outbreak. Hard to tell because it was not that bad and it seemed red but did not blanket the rocks and substrate. It was just stringy... Anyway, after numerous water changes and after adding Chemipure Elite it seems to be under control. From now on this will be a completely fish free tank. Strictly inverts and that's all.

Here are a few updated pics.

Hey Regric, what HOB filters are you using for this tank? And did you have to mod them at all?

Regric25
Sat, 24th Dec 2011, 02:46 PM
They are just 2 tetra GOB filters. No mods at all. instead of using the filter media they provide I still filter floss and chemi pure elite in them. There is no bio wheel or anything. Ill post dome new pics today as well as that dendro you are buying. :)

So today I got some sweet LED lights for my 10g nano. I was only able to fit 1 over the tank but I bought both so I could use them on a larger tank I plan on setting up later in the year.

To mount the lights over a tank using the mounting brackets you have to use these screws to keep the fixture clamped down on the tank. The screws had rubber on them and when you tighten them against the tank the bracket tightens around the rim...

I made the mistake of over tightening them and it cracked the glass!! I was so angry but quickly calmed down ater remembering its only a 10 gallon.

I went out for a replacement tank and came home with a 20g tall. So after setting up the whole new tank and trying to mount the lights I discovered they are not good for tanks with rims!!
I was not gonna let it go without a fight. So I did something that would make anyone very nervous and with the tank full and stocked I cut the middle section of the rim off. All corners are braced I just took off enough for the lights to fit. About mid way through it I realized what a stupid thing I was doing but figured i'm already 1/2 way there can't turn back now.. After about 15 minutes I finally got it off and the lights are happily mounted to the tank and I am very happy.:)

I discovered something else since adding my LED lights. LED lights = NO HEAT.. I did not have a heater on the 10 gallon because the PC lights kept the tank at temp. With these lights the tank now needs a heater. I will also need more dry rock. I'll be on the hunt in the WTB and FS section.

I know it looks funny with the HOB filters on the side but its the only way the lights fit. It's temporary until I get the 50g up and running this year. Here are some pictures of what I did.

ahh dude, those fixtures would have worked perfect on each end and the filters on the back... maybe?

I tried it with one fixture and it does not quite get all the way across.

nice job Rick...the LEDs look sweet, did you try and push them together to resemble one fixture?

I thought about that but the power plugs are on the sides and the one on the right is on the left side between the fixtures

ahh dude, those fixtures would have worked perfect on each end and the filters on the back... maybe?

I tried that first but the fixtures are 14" front to back each and the tank is 24" long so it looked like a steeple lol.

Any updates on the tank?

Hey Zack! Thanks for asking! I will get a few pictures tonight. It is doing great. Everything is growing in and happy. I have added a baby christmas wrasse to the tank. I had a small breakout of some kind of flatworm. They were tiny and all over my glass. They didnt seem to harm any of my corals. I have not added anything to my tank to xfer them to my water. I got the wrasse and she ate them all up along with all my pods...

I feed my tank 1x a week and the lights are on a dawn to dusk cycle. The heater is set at a constant 78 degrees and it never changes. Coral growth has been slow but I attribute that to lack of water changes and feeding. I do one about 1x a month. I think if I increase feedings and water changes the corals will grow faster.

The bryopsis seems to have melted away all on its own. I didnt have any fish for the longest time and I didnt feed the tank so I think I starved it out.
