For everyone that is using an RO/DI filter system is it worth the cost of having at your house versus having to go to the store to pick up filtered water?
In other words is the cost of the wasted water from the filtering process justified versus just goin to the store and purchasing it?

Now that i have 90 gal and 40 gal tanks i'm having to use more water for top offs, water changes and such. Just wanted to know if it would be worth the 300 or so dollars to just go buy an RO/DI setup?

Simple answer is Y E S ! !

$300 is really steep for an RO/DI unit. Closer to $100.

I think all together I easily paid $300 for my unit -and I still think it's worth it.
I have a 215g tank and a 60g tank and I go through a lot of water.
My system has a dual membrane so I can refilter the waste water and save 50% there. I have a booster pump. I can make 150gpd without leaving the house. I love it. Couldn't imagine having to drive to the store all the time to log 40 gallons home. Crazy

Another question would be how far is the fish store that you have to get R/O water from if it is 20 miles one way x 2 = 40 miles x .51 a mile vehicle cost = $20 every two weeks = $500 a year + water cost

very good point about the mileage. I've heard good things about buckeye units. any other recommendations ?

I also agree....waaaaaaaay worth it to get an RO unit. My non economical gas hog vehicle surely builds this case in itself.

Aside from the cost saving benefits already mentioned the peace of mind is enough reason to have an RO/DI unit. I can't think of anything better than being able to have a constant supply of top off water and premixed saltwater ready to go for any emergencies.

For reef tank water, go with Buckeye. If it was for household use, I'd suggest a fleabay one - but trying to get 0-1ppm on a cheapo unit is challenging.

Buckeye or FilterGuys

I wouldn't ever want to haul the water I use! That alone is worth it to me.

having 55g of RO/Di water in my garage that I know for sure is at 0 TDS is worth it. if you worried about waste do what I do (unit located in garage on wall) I run a 100-200ft waste line to my flower beds. so no ones the wiser that I'm watering lol.
