View Full Version : Octopus Skimmer Issues

Does anyone know Octo skimmers well?
I have an older 150 model that is bubbling too much. The air line is fully open (restricting it only makes it worse) and the adjustable return tube is all the way down.
Thing is, if I remove the o-ring on the stationary return tube I'm barely getting enough skim - but if I put the or-ring back on it skims way to wet.
Additionally, I took the skimmer out recently for cleaning and everything looks fine.
Any suggestions?

Needs to break in again. Get some filter floss and put it in front of the inlet on the pump.

I tend to agree with Ruben. On my old NW150, everytime I cleaned it it would go crazy for at least week until it built up a scum layer. I would restrict the flow with floss or screen for a while to see. Have you added anything to your tank or dosed anything out of the normal lately?

has the water level it sits in changed?

I think you guys might be right. I'll try the floss. As far as adding any thing different - nope, I'm sure it's more of a mechanical/flow issue.
I'll add some floss and rubber band it on - and keep you guys posted. Thanks.

Good point but not that I'm aware - however I will verify.
I know that this greatly affects my HOB mini Octo in my 25 gal. shallow cube, but my NW150 stays in the sump which keeps a constant level...although I have had a lot of evaperation after adding more fans to keep a more consistent lower temp...so it could play a factor.

They are correct. those are the only two things that will make it bubble too much.... your water level that it sits in has changed or it go a really good cleaning... there is one more thing... something was added to the water recently that will cause the water to foam really well,, IE pure soda ash. or something along those lines.

I think I might stick a ball valve in front of it.
