How does the actual Frag Swap thing work? Sorry if this is a stupid question... :o)

Not a stupid question at all.

The "true spirit" of the frag swap is to bring frags from your tank in the hopes of trading frags with someone else who has frags from their tank. There has also been folks who do not wish to trade, but will sell some of their frags.

One of the things you will see as we get closer are posts of lists of frags people are looking for or are willing to trade. That way you might be able to plan in advance for trading.

Oh I am glad to see an option for 'buy'. It would be tough to have exactly the kind of stuff the person wants that has what I want!

Buy is an option I have seen and I even bought a frag at the last swap, but the true meaning is a swap.

Kind of bummed I'm a sponsor now... I'm gonna leave the company for a month so I can participate...lol

I do not believe that we will be watching the clock though.

Hope this helps JT.

Sweet cause I would love to know the benifits and whatnot... I mean I get the general idea, I just have never dipped anything yet. So it will be a good learning experience to say the least. And I love learning when it's something I love.... So I really appreciate it.

...haha Kristy!

I had a blast and enjoyed chatting with everyone.

When I got home I was going through the rock that I dipped for the presentation, to dry it out and I found a little critter moving around. So not only did he make it through the dip but he also was still alive after being in the dry rock for over 2-3 hours. Check him out...

It's black and white, hairy crab with red eyes. A little larger than an eraser head.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5058/5562268851_a106004346.jpg

It pays to dip and pays even better to break up the rock and frag corals attached to rock. You never know what could be hiding in that little itty bitty hole.

I am actually able to attempt to sit upright today so it is a good day. LOL

It was my pleasure to send what I could. Just sorry I was not able to hang out with everyone.

Hey Angelo,Thanks for the kind words. It was great to see you as well. Along with all the new and familiar faces. Hope to see many of you out at our other events again. :) Maast has a great group of both Web & Charter Members. With everyone working together it really brings the best out in our club.

Stay blessed and a big hello to Elia. :)

for all the BOD people do they should be able to win prizes

I think I started this about a year and a half ago, when I was on the Board. I agree, for everything that the Board and Officers do, they should be able to participate. However, there were some Membership concerns about how things were done at several events/meetings, and when I ran for the Board in late 2009, I pledged to NOT participate in Raffles and Door Prizes, as part of my reform platform. This was embraced by the entire 2010 Board, and then 2011 Board, and I applaud them for it. Raffles and Door Prizes are are huge benefit to the Membership.

don't get me wrong I'de rather see members win stuff. I knew taking this position that those where the rules, I would have passed it on to someone else any way. I'm glad everyone that attended had a great time, I'm sure the board and committee members who worked hard to organize the event are pleased with how everything turned out, even the mad rush to get everyone out by 3. (thanks to the Rob the water Man)

I just wanted to say I had a fantastic time at the frag swap. Everyone was incredibly nice/informative/cool, the frags were at phenomenally cheap prices, and now my (comparatively tiny) tank is full of FANTASTICAL GLOWING THINGS!!! I am very glad I found MAAST/became a charter member and hope to continue harassing you all for information for years to come!

First of I want to thank everyone for all the great deals and knowledge that I walked away with. It was great seeing all the varieties of corals. I appreciated the coral dipping demo also. With that said, I was alittle upset with the fact all the sps died within the first 2 days. I wish I was informed by some of the seller/traders on the difficulty with sps. With only a year under my belt, I would have made the investments towards other easier frags and would not have had that experience . Obviously you live and learn though . All the other frags are happy and healthy though!!

well Ryan sorry to hear that but its impossible to know how a coral will do in someone elses system, but if you start a thread like in SPS forum we can probally help you trouble shoot why they died so fast(2 days is very fast). glad your other stuff is doing good.

Ryan,

Making the jump to SPS can be a difficult one. My recommendation is to always start with a couple of inexpensive "easy" ones, like green slimers or green caps (green slimers are still one of my favorites). If they grow, you can usually keep some more difficult ones.

With this in mind, it's rare that SPS dies in just 2 days from unsuitable tank conditions. I would re-check your dipping, transportation and acclimation process, along with a complete check of your tank's parameters. Yes, there are folks who don't test regularly and do well. HOWEVER, that is usually from folks who have many years of keeping SPS under their belts, and they can recognize problems by the reactions of their corals. You need a complete test run.

It might also help if you post a complete description of your setup, and what test results you have, including the brand of the test kit.

Getting over that SPS hump can sometimes be trying. We're here to help.

Ryan,

I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm sure none of the local reefers intended to sell you the SPS thinking they would not make it in your tank. As others have said before me we are here to help. So if there is anything that we can do to help just drop us a line and we will walk you through your problems. I've seen a few SPS keepers on these boards and many use different husbandry methods. Some methods are for the more advanced (zeo) and some are for the novice. I'm sure I or other can help you find something that is right down your alley if keeping SPS is something you want to venture in to.

Mark

I'll be heading to a frag swap in Ohio on the April 9th and ran across this site that they are using to organize the swap. I thought it might be an asset that MAAST might be able to use at their next meet.

http://fragswapper.com/

The site is free to use and people can list their for sale and wants on the site.
