Blacktop and Sideswipe have been living on opposite sides of tank, last few days they are staying closer together. Blacktop is clearly the dominant one so Sideswipe is keeping a safe distance but it seems the bonding process has begun

Ok. Confirmation! I officially have Red Bugs.. Beware.. I don't think i have Given or traded any SPS with anyone so no need to worry if you have gotten any from me. However, wanted to let everyone know.. I have received Acros from only 4 sources so if you are one of them. please take a look. I don't have the time, energy or resources (funds) to fight these things so I will most likely just go SPS-Less for a while. Really a Bummer!

I am trying to remember a dip that I read about not to long ago. It was an insecticide and safe for sps. I want to say a maastard posted the link....

Which treatment are you using?
The Patented texreefer "get the hell out of my tank"!!!! Method.. I will remove ever SPS from my tank for a Period of about 5 weeks (Long enough so no red bugs or AEFW can survive. I will dip each coral with Revive or Coral Rx and inspect and remove as much as i can find and place in quarantine tank. I will repeat this process once a week for 5 weeks along with weekly 5 gal water changes on both systems. Once i'm confident my Display is pest free, I will inspect my SPS once more, the ones that made it and/or are free of pests wil go back in.. the others...... well, they will go to coral heaven.

Did you find a heater? I am still rummaging through my stuff to find one.

I also pulled out some frags last night again and did not see anything on mine. I also checked and didn't get any frags from you.

Texreefer
Fri, 11th Nov 2011, 03:15 PM
Yes, have a heater and all corals have been dipped and moved.. will also do a bit of tank re-arranging today as well. found some dead or stunned red bugs but have yet to find any evidence of dead flat worms... they will all go through the process again in a week and I will probably try the method on RC that was posted.... keep you updated

justahobby

I'm surprised your melanurus didn't make short work of the flat worms. Mandarins may also eat the red bugs. The fattest mandarin I've ever seen was in a tank full of RBs and not eating prepared foods.

Texreefer
Fri, 11th Nov 2011, 03:45 PM
Justin, I have been blowing off the corals.. that might be why i haven't found any.... my hungry Melanurus. I only every found the one set of eggs so maybe I caught it before it got too bad. I do plan on getting an ORA mandarine at some point.

As soon as I saw your title about red bugs, I thought to myself, "He's got aefw too". That bites man. Betadine dips work well on the flatworms. I dipped an infested millie last year and saw about a hundred of 'em fall off.

yikes. good luck.
The good news is the corals are doing well in the quarantine tank. they have been in there for 6 days now. I'm doing a once a week 5 gal water change from my main tank to the quarantine tank and then out the door, so none of this will affect my main tank which looks great right now. in fact everything is growing really fast in the display. i'm having to clean the glass daily next to my Tyree Cap in order to keep it from growing too close to the glass. this thing has easily doubled in size since I got it from John. i will post a pic

Dip and water changes done!... LOTS of dead redbugs...since the first batch of eggs i found though, there has been zero sign of any AEFW alive or dead. I'm hoping thats a good sign. I used 10ml/1cup... it was milky white.. corals seem fine we will see how they do over the next few hours. I have inspected them throughly and only found ONE red bug still on a coral and it is DEAD. this bayer complete also had ZERO smell to it. looks like this stuff might be a winner

OOPS!!! I really did NUKE them! I re-read a lot of the info on this and it is anywhere from 0.5ml/cup to 2ml/cup and I dosed with 10ml/cup. 20 times the lowest recommended dosage.. Polyps are out and corals look fine...no wonder the water looked like milk. excited about the results so far

Sat, 19th Nov 2011, 02:01 PM
Thinking I will just do one more treatment next weekend and place all corals back in tank... there has been zero signs of any kind of pest. the only eggs I ever found have been long gone. i don't really have the time or energy to maintain this quarantine tank. I will give it till next saturday. if I see no signs of pests, I will dip again and place everything back in the tank...if I get the bugs again, all sps go bye-bye..

Powerful stuff!!! so I did one last dip and placed all my sps back in the main tank..I am confident that I am pest free at this point. I am also POD free and almost Peppermint free as well. Even though I rinsed everything before I put it back in the tank, it seems there was enough pesticide still present that It killed off my entire(and thriving) pod population. I realized this because this morning my larger peppermint was hanging out by the front glass looking a bit woozy. I immediately knew what it was and checked my fuge.. lifeless., oh, well. live and learn, they will come back. i'm running cabon and doing a waterchange... good news is corals look good and showing signs of new base growth

Glad to hear it worked so well. How long was the interval between last dip and return to display? I remember reading that some pesticides repel water so perhaps a very diligent rinse, blasted with a powerhead, etc could prevent exposure to the display.

quick update, it has been two weeks since the corals went back in the tank and all of them show signs of new growth, good polyp extension, and coloration. no sign of any Bugs to this point. I will be writing a short review if the product i used in a separate thread so it will be easy to access should anyone need it in the future.

I didn't get a pic but you could probably find one on line fairly easy... they are generallly about the size of a nickle to a quarter and can come in different shades of green /brown. usually have hairly looking legs. I know thats not the best description

Ewww, unless it was actually the molt of a gorilla crab and he might still be in your tank! I am continually amazed when Mike's giant hermit crab molts at how much it resembles a full-fledged crab, not the empty ghost of a crab the way a shrimp looks when they molt.

Just a quick update,, just realized my tank is already 10 months old. I seem to be pest free but have been dealing with base recession on my Acros. they are growing good from the top but receeding from the base up... I believe it is a Co2/ PH issue...cant seem to get my PH above 7.8.. of course i'm not using very reliable tests either.( on a side note, anyone that wants to stop by with a ph meter will be thanked) even though it is vented, my stand and my room are closed off and i believe excess Co2 build up is playing a part in keepin the PH down...I didn't have this problem during the summer when i run a fan in the room along with opening the windows on occasion.
Just added a male Lyretail last sunday that has some really nice color.. he has a couple of spots on him that are not ich that worry me a bit.. but he is active, is not scared of me and eats aggresively so I have hope he will make
I have been dealing with some algae as well since i haven't been cleaning the tank as well as i should...all my zoas got a good peroxide dip yesterday and the tank will be scrubbed clean this weekend.. Thats all for now

so whats life without a little adversity right?... I'm almost certain I have byropsis in my tank... I has started on all of my zoa frags.. and has spread to some other areas as well.. today I took out all my zoas and dumped them in a solution of 1/3rd tank water, 1/3rd peroxide, and 1/3rd straight Magnesium.. for 30 minutes... it will either kill everything, just the zoas, or just the bryopsis..no matter the outcome I will have results.. it if doesn't work.. I will be tossing all the infected zoas.

As far as the bryopsis goes... where did you find that recipe? Or was this something you came up with on your own? I would thin 1/3 peroxide would be a bit harsh.

So Looking at Lou's growth thread got me thinking about the growth in my tank...I have not been good at keeping progress pics and I have had trouble with my Acros but the growth on my other corals has been crazy good..My green cap has gone from barely 6" to almost a foot across in just a few months... the Tyree birdsnest frag I got from Chris Stands 6" tall and 3-4" in diameter(in the pic above) plus I have 9 frags of it that are bigger than the original piece he gave me. I have never seen a coral grow so fast. my war coral pictured above was just a small frag on a square plug and now it has grown over the plug and down onto the rock.. all i have been doing is a once a week 5 gal water change and dosing two part... Keeping it very simple seems to work

Planning a COMPLETE system teardown. ALL Live rock will be discarded. Some corals may have to be sold in order to pay for the new rock.. any Zoas, corals, etc that are infected with Byropsis will be given away with a warning or just discarded. All pumps will be soaked and scrobbed and maybe thrown out as well. I will be buying 50# fresh sand and 40-60# fresh live rock... I will create a more traditional deep sand bed and get a fresh start. I will give it another 6 months and if I see Bryopsis in my tank again, there will be a 60 gal cube for sale at a good price. In the mean time. if anyone even drives by my house and WHISPERS the word Bryopsis.. I will hunt you down,,,,,,,, Ok not really but I will have a very stongly worded message for you!!!!:bighug:

Man that sucks that you are gonna have to take down the tank to get rid of the bryopsis especially since its looking that good. My tank had bryopsis but I got lucky it kinda grew into a ball let go of the rock it was growing on and floated to the top where I then just scooped out the tank all together and it's never been back since.
If you end up selling that flower petal cap of fragging it out I sure would like a peice cause that thing is awsome!!

Let me know if you need additional space to house your frags while you rebuild. :) despite how that sounds, it's a genuine offer to temporarly house examples of your livestock if you do need to.

Thanks Allan, I appreciate that.. this is litterally going to be a one aternoon thing.. I will have rock, sand, extra water, all ready. remove everything, put sand, rock water back in and away i go. I really love the way my rock work is right now... so hopefully i can do something similar with the new stuff

So thought about what to do with adding new rock to the tank... almost went with Johns Idea if using Marco rock, even had it in the cart about to purchase it.. then decided to wait.. then I just happened to stop by a local shop that had just what I needed. 1 Rock... yep! I am buying 1 piece of live Rock to place back in the tank:bigsmile:

Mike, I did the same thing last year after battling bryopsis, derbesia, and cladothryopsis. But I just discarded the sand. Then I bleached, power washed, and froze the rock. I soaked all pumps, skimmer, reactor, and even he chiller heat exchanger in water/bleach for two days. I bought a hand sprayer and completely wiped down the tank with a 50/50 bleach/water combo. I'm a few weeks shy of a year and everything's still clean.

Sorry you're going through this. Sucks to see all your hard work go down the drain. Nothing makes it in my tank now, unless I can clip it and dip it first.

I will be keeping most of my existing sandbed and cleaning all my pumps etc. but I will have to have this done in one day.. tuesday in fact... I will need help getting the new rock in the tank... this rock is massive weighing in at 65#s it will require two sets of steady hands to place it... I only have 2" clearance at the widest points. I have never seen a Rock this huge in large reef tank much less a 60 gal. so yea, maybe i'm crazy.. but one way or another.. it will make a statement!

OK, I am laughing so hard right now.. My tail spot blenny has won the Lottery with this new rock. There are literally hundreds of small holes all over this thing.. He will swim from hole to hole, sit beside it, try to fit his head in, turn around and stick his tail in and wiggle to see if he fits or not, then off to the next one. it is one of the funniest things I have seen a fish do!

Cross your fingers everyone... there were two things that were growing Bryopsis that got moved into the new setup... my wifes two clams... found some growing on them yesterday... I pulled one out and scrubbed it really well, still need to do the other.
Pm a different note: with the exception of a couple of millies that I want, the top of my reef is set and ready to grow... I will now focus my attention on the lower reef and sandbed area.... Going to be looking for Acans, Ricordea, Gorgonians, maybe some tubastrea, definitely some of that sypodium,Zoas, maybe some more Chalices.

Pearlberry Acro VS. Hollywood Stunner...... The "Pretty boy" VS. the "heavyweight" and the results?????????????

The Pearlberry wins!!!!!!! Yes folks, in a "stunning" upset... the pearlberry leaves a big black eye on the Stunner.

Snails dislodged part of my Pearlberry and it fell on top of one of my small Hollywood Stunner frags.. there for more than a day and the pearlberry came out the winner...not what I expected!

The HStunner is a wimp. If a fish swims by mine too fast a part of it dies. Mine was getting close to 6" across in a perfect round saucer shape and in the last 2 weeks I have had 3 separate parts of it killed off by another chalice and one part right in the middle by sand sitting on it for less than a night.

Tank is looking good all grown in Mike.

some of you may have noticed I have not posted in a while... well. i'm about ready to toss this aquarium out the front door.... I have been very busy and stressed with work. I will be moving locations again soon and will be acting GM at the new location for the foreseeable future. we are in the process of taking down my parents house that caught on fire.. they don't have money to hire anyone so i'm am basically tearing in down myself piece by piece. all of my days off are spent doing this... i have not had time to clean or do a water change and actually ran out of water last night and had to fill it with TAP. all of my SPS are receeding at the bases again. including my awesome Efflo. the Bryopsis is taking over and it doesnt look like I will have any time for it for several more days. its not looking good for the future... just too much going on.. and to top it off I came home today to my AC overflowing in the attic and pouring water into my ceiling soaking all the sheetrock.. lots of $ and work.............................................. .......................!!!!!

I will give an opinion and review of the vega once it has been on the tank for a week or two but I can tell you a couple of things that have me a bit tweaked right now. These are very minor issues, well more of just a minor annoyance than anything, but what has be tweaked about it is how simple the solutions are that have not been addressed.
1. If you plan to Buy and "Hang" ONE Vega you have two choices. Buy the hanging kit and an EXT rail kit and Cut it in half with a hacksaw so you can attach the hanging kit, OR go to home depot,Lowes, etc and search for some random parts that will connect the light to the hanging kit. The response and solution from AI was to buy the $25 kit and CUT it in half. My solution: buy $3 worth of parts that could have easily been included in the hanging kit.
2. The new wireless contoller has a couple of programming bugs... instead of an addendum added to the shipping box explaining the problem and solution, I had to figure it out ask for help and wait for a response. their solution was to download the new firmware and re-install it. this worked and fixed the problem but again, they know its an issue and don't say anything until you figure it out and download the new software..
I am very pleased overall with this light so far.. just some little things that frustrate the process

Lights,,
Still early but i am completely sold! Quite possibly the last fixture I will ever have to buy for this tank. Had to turn it way down for now since it burned the tips off my Gorgonian.
Just the fact that all parts can be changed out and upgraded is enough to make it worth it.
Love the wireless controller because I can have it at my desk and adjust lights without getting up.
hanging kit allows it to be raised or removed in about 30 seconds
push of the button coral acclimation mode for adjusting new corals
besides the first two annoyances i mentioned, I have found nothing about it that I do not like

went hunting this weekend and when I got home my large efflo had fallen over onto my stunner and my frogspawn. Not a pretty site as all three were affected, the tank is not doing well now since several sps are starting to RTN... Big efflo has large dead spots and may not make it. frogspawn lost a couple of heads. and now red slim starting to develope. have no motivation to try and fix it. we will see how things play out

We'll get you through it Mike.
I think you should cut back the red led on your vega a little for a while to try. Someone will buy the efflo and that will free up space. I'm free this Saturday if you want help, or a boost, or a beer.

I bolt out of bed and run into the Office and turns out I was just out of water and the return pump was sucking air.

well its been at least a couple of weeks since i have tried to kill my tanks, so I figured I would try again last night..
set my automatic ALK and CAL dosers back up and then proceeded to foreget to switch the ALK pump back to auto after I primed the line.. so for about 12 hours I was dosing ALK into tank,,,, yep.. you guessed it... my tank was enjoying a white christmas this morning.... so the chalices and probably the two new Nice Acros i just got are probably toast... i'm my own worst enemy... I think it is my advanced age.....

crazy! I did this to my broodstock system a few days ago. I turn pumps off when feeding and it was the last feeding of the day and I didn't catch it until the following day when I went to do the first feeding of the day. Everything was fine... makes me wonder why we all freak out when we lose power for a couple of hours during a storm.

I did that twice to my 70g and lost 7-10
fish each time just leaving it over night sometime oxygen level can fall fast.

don't remember off the top of my head. but its around $60 may sell some stuff to get the pump but i need to come up with the cash to renew my membership first..... I have a small school of really cool damsels that i have had for a while and they have all decided that they will excavate 5 seperate caves under the rocks. that and the lack of skimmer really caused Havoc in the tank..

I came home today and got some food and stuck my hand in the tank waiting for him to come up and eat from my fingers as always and..............................Nothing!... I have done an extensive search and there is only one possible scenario, for some reason he jumped and the dog ate him. no other possibilities. he was there yesterday and I have no clean up crew that would eat him. very bummed!
