Hey yall. It's been a while since I've been on here, so I kinda feel "out of the loop." But I am starting to have an aiptasia problem, and wanted to see if there have been any relatively recent developments on the subject. So, my buddy broke down his tank, and gave me some nice pieces. I knew the zoanthid rocks had a few on them, but I took them anyway--I hated to see them get trashed. Now I have them slowly starting to spread all over my tank, which I knew would happen. I bought some Aiptasia-X as soon as I got the infested rocks, and dosed accordingly several times. They would appear to be gone, but within a week's time, they would start to open back up. By two weeks' time, all of the polyps would be back out. So I started leaving my pumps and such off for about 2 hours after application of Aiptasia-X hoping that longer=better. But they still came back after about a week or 2. So, has anyone had success with this chemical? And if so, what are the tricks to getting it to work? I made sure to adequately apply it to the disk of each anemone, and left the flow off for plenty of time, in my opinion.

If this seems to be the general trend for others who have used this chemical, then what else should I try? I have tried peppermint shrimp, knowing that they probably wouldn't be very effective, but hoping for some level of control, but my flame hawk kept killing them, which I also figured would probably happen. Therefore, I mostly have LPS and a few softies in my tank, with an orange monti plate and a staghorn colony, because they are apparently troopers compared to the other SPS I have tried. If it helps, I have a 55 gal tank with a semi-deep sand bed. I have good luck with LPS and shrooms and any color of ricordea but the green ones. SPS and zoanthids usually don't make it in my tank, so I felt ethically bound to quit trying them until I get a better system set up. I have a big cannister filter, a 150 gal Coral Life HOB skimmer, 2-150W K2 Vipers, and a 48" HO T5 with actinics, as well as 2 Koralia powerheads. I also have two fish, and Bangai cardinal and a flame hawk. I know that these specs don't necessarily have anything to do with the aiptasia problem, but here they are, just in case they effect your recommended treatments. Thanks!

I've had some success in mixing a paste of Kalkwasser and entomb each aiptasia, with the pumps off. If they pop back up, you have to prepared to hit them again. Frank Burr at LMAR mentioned a product he had success with but I don't recall the specific brand. Good luck.

Wasn't the brand "lemon juice"? lol
Joe's juice?
Aptasia X?
I've also seen these little aptasia zappy things too. They look like a pen, but shock the nems and I've heard good things about them but never been able to find them.

I would LOVE to have one of those zappy thingys, and I am sure that many others on here would as well. So if ANYONE knows how to procure one of these mythical "zappy thingys," let us know.

Sorry, but I have found out that this zappy thingy is not yet commercially available.
Let me google that for you. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Aptasia+Zapper

I have used the apistia X i turned of the power heads and just made sure i got the mouth REALLY good. I guess you could say OVERKILL. I have heard HOT BOILing water works well. But for apistia X thats all i did was get the mouth though if they shrink up on you before it gets in the mouth go to another one cause you lost your chance i had to hit one like 3 different times to kill it.

So when you say hot water, I assume that you mean to boil the water, get it into a syringe, and just squirt it onto the anemone? Or does it need to be injected? Either way, this sounds like it's worth a try, because I prefer to not use chemicals if possible--just make sure not to directly apply to any corals...

I've had good luck with injecting the boiling hot lime juice in them. The trick is to stab it way down into their body cavity and then push the plunger. More natural and cheaper than the Ap X, although I do like the syringe that came with that product.

My favorite tip came from Erik H. If the aptasia is on a rock that you can pull out of the tank, remove it and torch it with one of those candle clickers. Completely effective and highly satisfying!

YES you have to get it INSIDE The anemone, hence me taking 3 trys on some till i got it figured out. Trick is to get close then move quickly i think cause once you touch a tenticle its gonna close up.
