Do they work? Is this something worth buying, or not really?

alot of people use them. Apparently the new ones are better than the old ones, less clicking...

I'm enjoying my SCWD (old 3/4")...I have never had a wavemaker or vortech so I'm sure I would prefer that ove rthe SCWD...but I love this thing....have it hooked up to two dual returns with 3 k3's in a shallow 85g.

You could always try a OceanMotions Squirt. Since you dont have any sand you shouldnt have to worry about the SCWD jamming.
