We are a maybe- we showed last year and everyone has seen our tanks. We can be in or out, depending on how many people volunteer. If we have enough response, we could split it up over August and September... just a thought. We did 12+ hours last year and it was a long day, something like 10+ tanks.

When you guys do the tank tour how on schedule do they stay? I'd love to see a few tanks but 12 hours sounds kinda long. Is it possible to come along to see just a few?
Kristy
Mon, 2nd Aug 2010, 08:03 PM
Karin, Mike's reference to last year's tour lasting ~12 hours was to say that we DON'T want it to take 12 hours this time and would rather split it up into two different weekends.
Also, we stay pretty well on schedule and also you can call in to ask where we are on the tour so that you know where to join in. I will send out a schedule / itinerary before the tour occurs.

Mon, 2nd Aug 2010, 08:08 PM
Karin, Mike's comment about it taking 12 hours was to highlight the fact that we don't want to spend a whole 12 hours... it's just way too much. We'd rather split it across two dates.
We do stay pretty well on the schedule and everyone will have a schedule / itinerary, but you can also call in to ask where we are on the tour to join us.
How does Saturday August 28 sound to you guys?

Just a thought for another time. Have you ever considered having it an open tour, advertising to reefer and nonreefers. Create a guide with a few pics/descriptions of the tanks, and then let people go to the tanks they want to see. It's a good way to introduce new folks to the hobby, and streamlines the process for those attending. I did this type of tour in SLC and loved it. People came in small groups and were very interactive.

Bs, you triggered a thought in my brain pan. Has there been any attempt to alert the media (newspaper) to run an article? In the hobby or lifestyle section?
The reporter could hit a house or three, snap a few pics interview some members, perhaps the prez?
Sinner would be an excellent interviewee. Especially if he runs with the convoy on his bike. It would go a long way in dispelling the stereotype we have. We could call him the "Stereo Type Destroyer" Or maybe some kind of acronym? :)

Aug 28th works for us.
On a side note, I would not want to invite the entire San Antonio population into my home. I don't mind people from MAAST coming by because they are coming for a specific reason - to see our aquarium. There has been a lot of home invasions going around and a few have happened to our fellow reefers. Just trying to play it on the safe side.

This is really a great idea. Not invite the world into our homes but invite a reporter in and have them share our interests to locals. Could be a big boost for area sponsors and MAAST.

I dont think its been determined yet, Allan. Alex, I think we might be full on this tank tour but can try and work you in on the next one if you are still interested.
The current tank tour route looks like this:
BSJF
Allan
Pennies2cents
PhippsFJ
StangChris
Cowboy527
This route works its way around 1604 pretty nicely.
Those are all the people that pmed me their address.
I also posted the new list to the first page for easy referencing. We will decide on a meeting spot to begin the tour/carpool. At that point we will also hand out the directions, etc. needed for the tour. That way we dont have to post up peoples addresses on the internet for everyone to view.

Hey Joseph, saw your post about participating in the tank tour. Heck yeah, we would drive down south to see your tank!... especially if you are the guy with the LED light system that we spoke with on the Austin tank tour. Am I remembering you correctly?
We are working on the tour schedule. Responses keep trickling in (NOT TOO LATE!) so it looks like we might be splitting the tour into two separate weekends. We're looking at Saturday Sept. 11 for Part 2. Please let me know if you are available for August 28 or September 11 or both/either so we can plan accordingly. (Meaning that if you are available both weekends we will put you where the route works best).
Will post in the Announcements thread as soon as a few more details get buttoned down. If you are interested and have not sent your address to either kkiel or myself, please do so asap (ahem, Erik... this means you!)

Ummm... sorry about the mixup, but don't worry Alex is in the tour and so is Joseph! I have not updated this thread enough, but that is part of why we decided to split it into two because there are just too many AWESOME tanks we want to visit!
Look for an announcement in the MAAST Announcements forum (say, by this weekend?) with the info as to where we will start off. Kevin and I are revamping the final schedule.

Cool Doug,
I'll be on two as well. They have a CVMA ride out to Adkins, starts at 8 from caliente, but I think the tank tour is going to get in the way. Either way, there's going to be two other clubs out on two wheels on the 28th. I might even clean up my ride a bit.
Really looking forward to seeing Alex's tank. What kind of light set up do you have there?

All,
Thanks for the complements.
Allan,
I'm running 3x MH 250w @12k and 4xPC 96w for my actinic. The light is border line too bright. The open brains, acans, and scoly's can't find enough shade. On the other hand I have a bunch of other corals that love it. You just can't win...

Actually last year I think Steve mentioned that having new tanks available for the tour gave us newbies an idea of what to expect. I thought it was a pretty good idea. Especially such a well thought out tank like yours. Part of the presentation is the gadgetry that makes the tank possible.
How many times have we responded to an emergency in the emergency thread concerning brown diatoms?

Hi all. I live in far south Bexar county. I have a 10 gallon tank with undergravel filter that I just set up last night. Can you add me to the tour list? I currently have 2 gold tetras in the tank. My lfs told me that tetras are a great beginner saltwater fish.
J/K. Can't wait to see the final list in the next few days.

my thinking exactly Cory. When I say close I mean 30 minutes instead of 2 hours. Right now it still would be pretty out of the way just for a brand new tank. Hopefully next year it will be glorious enough to be worth the drive. :)

Hey Karin, I wasn't making fun of your tank or location. Actually, I'm pretty jealous of your setup. I was talking about a story that I heard about a previous tank tour participant a few years back.
Seriously, I think the only way I can out do your shadow box idea is to have a flat screen tv behind my tank. Honestly, if I had the money, I'd do it. Kind of hard to justify the extra $2500 expense to my wife, at this point. But, couldn't you imigine the possibilities with a dynamic background like a LCD screen behind a tank?

Working on details this weekend. Will post announce tomorrow.
All participants: I will be putting together a Tank Tour schedule so that everyone on the tour has a roster to follow. I like to provide a little information about the tanks we will be visiting, so please send me a pm with a synopsis of your tank (how many gallons, how long has it been set up, highlights of the equipment and livestock to include anything unusual that we should be sure to notice, etc.) Here is mine for an example:
Mike and Kristy have a 210g mixed reef that has been set up since 2008. Lighting is two 250w MH and 48" of T5s; flow is two Vortech MP40s and two MP20s. The corals are primarily LPS and softies but there are a few SPS mixed in there. We have stocked this reef with LOTS of fish because we really like all the color and movement that you can get from two groups of anthias and bright flashes of wrasses. Be sure to check out the basket starfish that we've kept since 2007.

Members, the tank tour is for every tank out there. Any tank can be in the tour. It doesn't have to be "glorious enough" to be on the tour. It can It can a starter system, to a slow build (like mine), to a full blown reef system. It's to show how each member handles the different aspects of the aquarium. From filtration, lighting, livestock, and aquascaping.
