I know what rob was referring to awhile back when he decided it's the blue lights that make things pop.
These are evening shots with four t5 blue lights on. Of course it's with an iPhone because all of my money goes to the tank leaving none for a camera.

And the fat and oft gregarious starry "the pot bellied" blenny laying down in his bed for the night.

MH & VHO = old school and infinitely proven! ;)
Bullstedman, check out GrimReefer's posts on Reef Central in regards to bulb combos on a T5 rig. He's the guru.
Allan, I need to come steal some stuff!

Eric you're welcome any time, beer is in the fridge.
MH really scares me as far as water temp, besides I've got some really good growth as it is now.
I use the glo ballasts, and have four of the blues and the other six is divided between the whites and those purple and pink bulbs with names like coral excellerator and coral stimulator (whaaa?).
My frag tank is woefully underpowered though. That and I used a MH in it. Didn't care for it.

Thats why you go open top with MH, looks better. best growth ive seen is with MH ive owned tek fixtures, and ill always run MH, now a combo of MH + t5 supplement is ideal

Go blue or go home....
lol
I don't care how you get it (blue)...MH, VHO, T5, LED...just get it.
My new frag tank will actually be half and half. One half T5 (4 x 24w) for LPS and low light corals and the other half 175w MH (20k) for SPS and 4 LED PowerBrite modules spread evenly across everything just to "get it".
Looks great Allan. That Blue Polyp German Digi is jamming and by the looks of it you have it at the bottom of the tank under T5...pretty impressive to say the least.

+2 on GrimReefer's advice. We asked and used his recommended bulb combo and everything is looking good in our tank.
Also, I wouldn't say T5's are just for low light corals. Our SPS is growing quite well with only T5's.

You must be refering to my comment and u took it out of context. I did not say T5 is only for low light Corals, I said I was putting my low light Corals under them on one side of my tank and sps on the other side. Also in comparison of one side being 24w T5 bulbs and the other 175w MH, I would say the low light Corals would go under the T5.
Anyways....it was just an example of how i'm using T5, MH and LED all in one tank. Frag tank.

ooh, if only I knew what a blue german polyp was or is. Is it that stick thing poking out on the right facing to the left? The only stick thing I see in those pics are the pink birdsnest... which I haven't been able to get it to go really pink or red, rather just that reddish hint.

Lights: move forward Allan. No point in spending money on old stuff. Sure it's proven and still works but why waste all this energy to heat up your tank.
If you want to move away from T5s safe your pennies and go for LEDs.

i also love the shimmer from MH and LED, almost like real sunlight just blue lol. I can't knock LED cause I grow sps in my pico under led's

The only problem I have with LEDs is that I don't fully trust them as much as the t5s.
Karin, if that's the German polyp then I have it about three to four inches from the sand bed, but it's growth indicates an intent to get closer to the light. Hold on and I will post a pic.

And behind that is a green slimer just over the sand bed under the t5 set up.
But yeah, no shimmer effect.
