Hey Everyone. :)
Here are a few shots of our Bangaii Cardinal who is currently holding babies. :) I mentioned this in Justahobby's thread and so I decided to pull out the camera and take some shots.. Here they are for your enjoyment..
Sorry for the blurriness... Need to have my lenses cleaned.

So want to catch and rear them in the biocube.. but thinking it may be best for all to leave everyone alone and of course let nature take its course.
I think he will be releasing tonight, as you can see in the pics the babies eyes are well developed as well as their little fins as you can see in the 1st pic... The second pic is my favorite as I somewhat captured the moment of parent & sibling eyes.... :)

Well, nature taking it's course means food for your reef. : (
I vote to rear them in the BioCube!

Very cool! Like Rob I'd feel like at least trying to raise them.
Can they eat baby brine? I still have half a jar of BRD decapsulated hatchable eggs if you want to give it a shot.

Baby brine would be an excellent start. If you don't pull the male out, you might also try a fake urchin to give the babes a hiding place.

Ross & I were talking about it last night, and we were wondering what they would eat??? Live Phyto, Baby Brine????
I guess if the male still has them in his mouth when I get home from work. I will see what I can do....... :)

Everyone i have read w/ success, starts w/ enriched baby brine. You can work up to cyclopeeze, but that usually takes a few weeks. Feel free to call me this evening.

Thanks Justin for the info. :) And everyone else who has offered to help get these babies going...
I just got home from work, and noticed that the babies are still in dad's mouth. :)
I am wondering if the pump in the BCube is too strong for them??? Or should I get one of those breeder nets???
Back in the FW days when the babies were ready. I would catch the parent and strip the babies from her mouth.. I dont want to risk anything happening to the dad if I did this.. Your thoughts? Or should I just catch dad and put him in the Bcube and let him release there or what?????
Any experts out there~~~~~~

19 total... :) What a nite... super excited, yet soooo tired... All well worth it. :)
19 cute babies born @ 2:00am 06-30-10 released in display tank just scooped em right up. They were fairly easy catch as they drifted towards to top of the tank. We had turned off the system right as lights went out and tried to catch dad.. But he was not going to have it. So out they came..
They do not have their yolk bags as you can see in the pics, and are trying to feed on the brine shrimp I managed to suck up with the turkey baster from the main display. Babies were immediately removed from tank to bucket to biocube. All are doing good 1hr into. Actively swimming all in a close knit brood.
I am happy! We will see what the rest of today brings. :)
Good Night all!

Its all good Justin! :) the funny thing is a year ago.. one of the parents was a tiny baby just like yours now.. We got em from Phenominal Aquatics. :) The other we purchased from Great White as a group of 4.. So at one point we had a total of 5. But lost the others. And now only have 2.

FYI: I had excellent success getting them to eat the gel cyclopeeze from IO, bloodworms (when a little older), and they go monkeys for the live artemia. They never seemed to notice when I enriched the artemia with amino acids. I've been really interested in these, maybe you can give em a shot hehe:

They take about 12 hrs to make.... i wouldn't stress it. That yolk sack will carry em until you get them hatched

I should mention, in case you haven't read it yet, they are prone to SIDS if scared and prevention seems directly linked to enriching food

Day 2..
All babies are doing well and have settled in the Biocube nicely. They are eating and eating quite a bit. In the morning we feed
First Bites by Hikari Tropical a supplemental food source for newborn fry. They seem to like it and are eating good. At night we feed small mysis shrimp from our main display tank that we manage to get with a turkey baster and then direct feed. They love this more than the supplemental food. They hunt the shrimp and quickly swim to catch and devour their share... Its tough to feed all but I try. With the continuous supply in the display there is enough to go around for everyone.
Keep you posted as the days pass...

How did the culture kit from the MAAST library work out?
So far so good.. We first used the San Francisco Bay Shrimpery (little black box) and we are getting baby brine this morning. It took about 30 hrs. We also have the other one hooked up (black base w/2 liter bottle) and should have brine at about 3pm today. The baby bangaii cardinals are going crazy for them and are doing well so far. We do have one casualty and are still at 18 on day 3.

Here we go.. Pics.. Finally. :)
Babies are now: 6 weeks old and we only have 8 babies left of the 19.. Starvation was not the issue as all were eating good. It has been a sibling rivalry since the beginning in which now only the bigger ones have managed to stay alive this long. They love their "Live Brine Shirmp" its a very dedicated process to raise these babies.
Two weeks after these babies were born the male was holding again. He did fairly well with getting them to hatch and such:ph34r:, but, during the time I noticed that the new babies were coming (hatched) just not sure of the date we had to go out of town, low and behold he released the 2nd batch he was holding. Most got eaten but 3 managed to survive the gauntlet:ph34r:... We came home to find them hiding in little crevices in 3 different areas of the tank. We caught them and they are now safe in the BC with the others and are holding their own.. So total we have a total of 11 babies.
Here are a few pictures for you to enjoy.. Taken 2 days ago..

Size - I would say they are about 1/4 inch.
We did try and "release" them into our BioCube but they were struggling in the flow from the return. We were able to catch them all again but lost a couple due to the stress. We'll try again once they have gotten bigger in size.

Great Job! I always wanted to try breeding Bangai's since they are now CITES listed and the cb ones do so much better than the wc. Brine shrimp direct has some good growout feeds that might work as a good replacement for the bbs if you plan on continuing to raise them.

Good news.. :) Ross found 6 more babies in the over flows. 3 on each side. For a total of 10 babies I am guestimating that they are from the 1st batch... :) They are plumpy and look very healthy.. Prob a little bigger than the ones in the bio-cube.. Thinking of just leaving them there and letting them grow. How we are going to get them out I have no idea.. But I will leave that for another day..
On the other hand. Female still showing signs of wanting to spawn the male is showing no interest.. :( Keep ya'll posted.

Goodness Eve, where do you keep all these babies! lol
(and why are there not more pics?)
Lol.. Karin.. probably out of 20 babies our success rate so far is a whopping 4 out of 20 make it to adults... And the time period at which they become juveniles takes a while. :( We sold the only 4 we had to fellow maast members. 3 made the transition and lost one in the process..
Regric, I promise I will get your baby out... lol..
That was another experiment we had going on.. Of those that we were not able to catch when we stripped the male of the babies they went into the over flow.. We noted that the babies in the overflow grow twice as fast and eat alot more rather than the those who we have in the fuge chamber. But when transferred to the fuge from the overflow babies were subject to stress which ultimately caused their deaths. The fuge babies also were subject to the stress but eventually got used to my hands in their small tank space, as well as they got used to being fed with a turkey baster. And in the end were stronger & healthier.
Our last bunch.. was due on valentines day, needless to say we missed the due date... :( We thought babies were not ready yet, checked again on Wednesday and he had already released them into the tank. Who knows... maybe we have some in the over flows.
To be continued...
