Can I gut this unit and use everything but the housing to run 8 shorter bulbs

See if you can find a name plate on the ballast and then research it. I don't see why you couldn't run shorter bulbs with it. I am just not sure how many.

Ruben as far as I know as long as you don't exceed the wattage.
