I recently purchased a 75 Gallon Tank and Im in the Set Up process, still mixing Water/Salt
My question is I purchased a Fluval FX5 (Open Box/Less than $150.00) What do you guys think about the Fluval FX5

I don't have the Fx5, but I do run two Fluval 405's for my 100gal. I bought them because of being on the second floor of an apartment and worried about flooding(before I knew about how you can drill the hole to stop suction). Fluval has been good for me so far.

great filter, but as with all canisters just gotta stay on top of changing out media, and making sure not change too much, as not to take out too much established bacteria(good kind)

i ran my fluval with filter pads and live rock rubble in the baskets, and every once in awhile i would put a pouch of carbon in one of the baskets. i changed out the canister for a sump because i was going through a lot of filter pads and cleaning it out every two weeks. the one thing i miss is how quiet the fluval was.

I love my fluvals....I just know that eventually as my stock grows I'll go with a sump, unless I could figure a way to run 3 fluvals inline, lol. Only thing making noise is the protein skimmer, but it's nice.

I really like the fluval FX5 from what I Have used it on it seems well built and great filtration. not to mention the nice lil microchip in there that wont let you burn out the motor. I never replaced the filter pads unless it was polyfiber or another fine filter pad, everything else I just rinse until it rinses clear. Use mostly carbon and some bioballs/LRR in the baskets and havent had any problems. Just have to remember to clean it once a month or so w/ your partials. It is recommended however to clean your sponges more frequently if you notice a nitrate problem.

Fluvals are ok. The Fx5 is prob their best model. I like eheims,2217's to be exact. They last forever. Your gonna have a nitrate factory inside that cannister unless you do frequent cleanings or have a kick *** prefilter.
