I went to a lfs to pick up enough live sand to fill my 13x13x16 fuge 5ish inches deep, The sales rep there told me that deep sand beds are old school and going away people are changing to shallow or no sand because deep sand can cause problems like holding toxic gas that can then escape and cause lots of problems. He made it sound good and well he did not try and sell me on something other than sand so I figure he must have believed it.

I'm not sure what to believe lol most of the stuff I have read has said a deep sand bed in the fuge is what you want.

So how much sand is in your fuge ? deep +4" shallow -2" or none.

would also be cool to say why you choose how much to use

Thanks
John

Ping would be a great person to talk to about this. I have zero sand in my fuge as it was leaking but I put a 1 inch sand bed in mine as my display has a 3-4 sand bed. From what I remember is fuges can be set up a couple ways. Cryptic fuge- has a bunch of sponges that filter the water. DSB- which helps to convert nitrates, etc. Macro- which usually has a shallow sand bed but have seen some with dsb. These use macro to convert nitrates. Im sure there are others but these are the main ones I can think of. Again I would talk to PING as he has tons of refugiums.
