As many of you all know we came across an issue with our previous 240 tank and decided to consolidated pretty much most of our fish & coral to purchase a new one. :bighug:
Well the time is finally here that I start a new build thread. My husband (roscozman) has been quite a busy man :whew: these last couple of months. He has diligently been working on the stand & towers, sump and finally finished painting, sanding etc. He's done a great job. Here are a few pics.:photo: to get this party started.
And so it begins! :applause:
Here is a photo of what it used to look like. Im sure everyone remembers the "Hot Pink" lol...

Don't let Eve fool you... she has put in a ton of work on this upgrade as well...
I am one to ask advice and questions from the great people here on MAAST (and RC) because I know someone has done it before. So I will start all my questions on this thread.
Many things will remain the same on the outside, but inside the tank and stand, many changes are taking place. One of these is now the new tank will be 3/4" glass as compared with the old tank at 5/8" glass. My concern is tank weight and support from the stand. Tank total dimensions are 96"x24"x24". One adjustment worth noting is we will go from a 4" deep sand bed in the display to a 1" sand bed and we will keep about the same amount of rock.
I input the calculations and came up with the following:
Old Tank:
Length - 96.00 in.
Width - 24.00 in.
Height - 24.00 in.
Wall-Thickness - 0.63 in.
Volume - 239.38 gal (us)
Tank Material Weight - 485.83 lbf
Water Volume - 213.92 gal
Water Weight - 1,817.48 lbf
Substrate Type - Sand
Average Substrate Depth - 4.00 in.
Substrate Weight - 490.83 lbf
Approx Total Weight - 2,794.14 lbf
New Tank:
Length - 96.00 in.
Width - 24.00 in.
Height - 24.00 in.
Wall-Thickness - 0.75 in.
Volume - 239.38 gal (us)
Tank Material Weight - 586.01 lbf
Water Volume - 233.01 gal
Water Weight - 1,979.67 lbf
Substrate Type - Sand
Average Substrate Depth - 1.00 in.
Substrate Weight - 122.71 lbf
Approx Total Weight - 2,688.38 lbf
The calculator indicates the new tank will weigh approx 106 less. Is this accurate with a 3/4" glass tank - 8 foot long. I know the sand weighed a lot, but didn't know if it would balance out this way?
Also, you can see the stand in the pic. Should I add additional supports? I don't know if I have the room because sump and pump are now approx 92" (added a union valve).
Thanks.

Sand and glass are both significantly heavier than water.
Personally, I'd like to see better support than every 48". Even every 32" makes me nervous. How well did the last tank hold up? 100lbs isn't going to make a big difference one way or the other. But I'd like to see more support.

IIRC, that stand was built by pete and has a 2x4 frame inside. it should be fine without any extra support.
you also forgot to adjust the water volume down for the new tank since the glass is thicker with the same outside dimensions.

I think that was offset by the 3" less of sand, Ace, and that's why the volume is larger.

I was going to add some 2x4 frames to the corners for extra support. Don't know if every 32" would work with the doos in front?

Thanks Ace. Yes, It does have a 2x4 frame. I also added a 3/4" plywood sheet to the bottom (inside stand). The previous floor was MDF and was flaking away.
I found this link for the calculations:

Thanks. Some are new, but many of them are frags or colonies from our previous tank.
are you giong to run only t5s and a few LEDs?
Yes, 60" and 36" T5 and the are 6 bulbs deep. We run 4 ATI Blue Plus, 1 Figi Purple and 1 6500 Daylight bulb. We do have some DIY LEDs for the moonlights.
Back in Black! Stand and canopy is looking good!
Yes, we like the way the black is coming out.
WOW. I like it in BLACK. That plate is lookin' good too!
Yes Bill, the plate is coming back slowly but surely.

We are keeping up with the holding tank with regular water changes. We have been trying to hold back but have bought a few things here and there. The frags are growing out nicely.
What type of paint did you use on the stand??
DEVFLEX Acrylic semi gloss Black and the primer was Prep & Prime Waterproof Sealant from ICI Paints. Was not cheap...

Do you have any update pics of it all together?
We do not have it set up yet because we are still waiting on our tank to arrive(hint hint):at_wits_end:.
Everything is painted and ready for set up. I have moved the tank stand in the house and set up the sump and fuge. We are still looking for a water storage container (20-40 gal) for the ATO and need to run the RODI line through the attic.
We are getting anxious...

glass is an amorphous (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amorphous_solid) (non-crystalline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal)) solid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid) material

Mon, 1st Feb 2010, 03:45 PM
Glass is actually a supercooled liquid, not a solid.
Glass :
NOUN: 1. Any ofa large class ofmaterials with highly variable mechanical and optical properties that solidify from the molten state without crystallization, are typically made by silicates fusing with boric oxide, aluminum oxide, or phosphorus pentoxide, are generally hard, brittle, and transparent or translucent, and are considered to be supercooled liquids rather than true solids.

Before everyone departed and we would be left to do the plumbing. Ross asked one favor. Can we please measure to make sure the bulk heads are going to fit correctly in the corners of the stand...
Well.... They didnt... :( And thank goodness everyone was still around cause the tank had to be taken off the stand not (1)once not (2) twice but (3) three times.... :whew::whew::whew::whew::whew::whew:

Oh yes, the skimmer a ASM 300 I believe. Will definitely fit in that area nothing has changed spacing wise from the previous setup. That tank you see is a 90 gal same as before. If anything we now have a little bit more room. ( a big +) The LRyou see in that pic will be moved to an area in the big tank. It is only there temporarily.
Thanks for the comps... :)

Another thing I wanted to share...
I used Google SketchUp to help with the design of the sump area. I asked many questions and made many adjustments before we actually put the sump/fuge in the stand. SketchUp helped us in the process and made it much easier to plan ahead of time. You can see the design compared to the final product:

Thanks, :) The rock work was done with lots of patience.. lol... We got this idea from the January Meeting down in Corpus and the topic was bio-topes. Hope I spelled it right.
Any how, We had lots and lots of rock to choose from as our previous setup was filled to the rim with all different types of LR so we chose to use all FIGI rock with this one.. :)
Trust me, With the last setup we rushed alot of things that included putting in our fish and coral very early on in the game, we came out with a few bumps and bruises but in the end we learned quite well that it is "always" the best idea to let it run and cycle for a couple of days even weeks to say the least.
The 240 has now been running for 2 weeks and the cycle has begun. We used already established LS & SW from our 75 gal that has been running since we took down our 125. The LS used is small crushed coral (agronite). There is about a 1.5 inch layer of LS in the tank in all areas.

I was looking at our 75 temp tank today and noticed the RBTA looking alot nicer than most days.. So I got the camera and I was able to snap a few shots.. All coral and fish in this tank will eventually make their way into the 240 when the time is right. :)

Google SketchUp is fairly easy to use. The great part is you don't have to build everything from scratch. Go to the 3D Warehouse and download something you need for free. The bulkheads, unions, light fixture, skimmer and other items I just download and placed in my design. Once you get the hang of how to flip, rotate and scale a particular item, it is pretty easy. They even have tutorial videos. I watch one of these and that is how I learned to make my hose turn and twist the way I needed it to.
Remember this is in 3D, so you can get an accurate picture of how things might fit BEFORE you actually build what you need.

I don't know how to use it, but my son is using it in his Multi media class and he's only in 6th grade. He has come home and tried to show me how to use it, but I didn't get into it. A pretty cool little program though.

Try watching some of the tutorial videos. I watched these at the beginning and started with basic shapes. Start small making squares and circles then you figure how to make holes in them and scale them bigger and smaller. The tape tool is great because you can measure ahead of time and make your item the exact size.
I first used the program to design a stand for our 125gal. I took it to my brother-in-law (High School Shop Teacher) and he thought it was great and very accurate. We never built the stand because we sold the tank before I could build it. Just keep playing with it and you'll get the hang...

My attention span usually doesn't allow me to follow along on build threads but not this one! Everything is turning out nicely. Good job guys. How did you get a carpet from the aquarium?
Edit: Whoa great FTS. Crazy how the yellow tangs look so small when they would be huge in my tank lol

. How did you get a carpet from the aquarium?
Logan (Squiers007) put it up on here a couple of weeks ago in the For Sale/For Trade section. I just got lucky and was the first to see it. He had only one condition - to pick it up in Corpus Christi. So... Eve and I, along with Sinner and his wife, took a drive and went this past Sunday.
We had a green carpet before, but had to make a tough choice when the center brace fell on our old tank. We could keep the carpet (14-16 inches) and not much anything else in a 75gal, or sell and keep a variety of coral from our previous 240. We chose to sell.
We are just very appreciative to have one again and hope to do Logan proud and keep this one healthy for a long time.

Update:
Well, we have slowly been putting out corals in the 240.. We put what was left of our zoas (not much) in the tank and sold off the 75 gal & light fixture and replaced it with a 14 gal bio-cube w/ stand as a QT and softie tank. Be on the look out for the Bio-Cube thread.. In the mean time.. here are a some pics of the corals and fish we have purchased in the last 2 months.. :)
Enjoy!

Hmmm... I keep looking at those mandarin pictures and think I have to disagree with Kevin. Looks like a juvenile male to me whose flag is just not fully mature. Our female's top fin was always rounded even after three years in our tank, no spike at all (unlike the target mandarin females who have a little bit of a mini-spike, making them much harder to distinguish their gender). Anyone else have a thought on this? How about Corydude, I know he has had a female blue mandarin for a couple of years (POTM!) What does her top fin look like in comparison with this one?

really? it looks like it has a really extended spike. I have talked to Wittenrich (the first one to successfully breed mandarins in large numbers) about the male female thing and his take was that while pointy (instead of rounded) dorsal fins are possible in females in all the pairings he has witnessed he's never seen a female with an extended spike. Pointy yes; extended no. Based on that I would say it looks like a male to me.

Let me talk with Ross about fragging it.. We are going to through some issues with our tank and for some odd reason only a select few sps survive. this one being one of them.. even after being in our tank for almost a year now.. I will Keep you posted :-)

Hey Everyone,
Hope all are doing well and your tanks are looking awesome. :) While going through a dry spell with our 240, its seems the sparks are flying once again. Im in love with our tank. All fish are still fat as can be. Bruce, Bella and the gang are all still with us except for one lil feller. :( The Naso Tang decided to jump!
We recently decided to do some changes to the tank, and it was definitly well worth it. The T-5's are no longer T-5's.. We now have a Metal Halide Fixture, and I love it! Ross did an excellent job in setting this one up. Good Job Babe! You Rock! Pics up soon....
