View Full Version : Too much of a PH Swing?

I have a little side bet going on and wanted to see what you guys consider to be too much of a PH swing. Would raising the PH from 7.9 to 8.2 in under 2 minutes be considered too quick of a change and stress out the inhabitants? I for one think it is bad practice to dose and swing the PH that much in such little time, but I'd like to see what others think.

I would agree -- thats a hard shift, REAL fast.. I'd be surprised if in a reef tank there weren't at least a few casualties of some sort..

That much change in 2 minutes? I would think that would be really bad. Probably fatal for echinoderms and stressful for a lot of other critters.

That's pretty big. However, it would not be unusual in real life. A large influx of fresh water would show the reverse of that, and vice versa would show that.
I often top off some of my smaller tanks with somewhat huge doses of RO/DI water. Gotta think the pH swing goes with it.
BTW, pH is a logarithmic scale. 7.9 to 8.2 is HUGE...
So, just to be pointed - that swing sounds and looks horrible. But, tolerable.

Why is the ph so low in the first place, that's the problem.

Thats a very bad jump 7.9 to 8.2 in 2 min ouch if you dont see with your eye something dead i guarantee the little guys in your sand bed felt it :(

I agree with Bill. Not optimal, but unlikely to nuke.

Well, all my little fish and corals survived the ph swing last night. My husband decided to hold a conversation with me while I was dosing and I pored in a little to much.....

Glad everything went fine. :) Fish and coral are more tolerant of this. Starfish and urchins might have been more at risk with this.
