ok, carter and i are planning to build his new stand (and possibly canopy) on saturday, october 17th. we will get started around 10am and it will likely take us a few hours. if you have ever wanted to learn how to build a stand or canopy, here is your chance. maybe we can all pitch in for some pizza for lunch or something.

if you are planning on coming, please post here in this thread. later, i will put up my address for anyone that doesnt know how to get to my house.

**disclaimer - i will be showing how i build stands/canopies. remember, there is always more than one way to skin a cat (cat lovers, it is just an expression :)) i will not be making any money on this, carter is bringing the materials with him for this project.

I'm interested in learning how to build a canopy. A stand refresher wouldn't hurt either. I'll plan for it.

Dang it! :(
But any who, thanks for sharing!
I wish I lived in S.A. just so I can learn more.
It would probably be tons cheaper for me to learn how to make a stand of my own.
I'm looking into upgrading my tank from a 29 gallon to perhaps a 70 gallon.

In my city, I don't think there's that many in the saltwater hobby.
If they are, they not active online or in the community.

Well since I won't be there, good luck! lol
If you guys take pictures, I would love to see! :)

you know mabel, sa isnt that far a drive, and you could use it as an excuse to hit the sa sponsor shops while you are here ;)

lol hobogato, I actually do visit sponsor shops.
I stop at Gabe's and Phenomenal.
I'll be in S.A. hopefully in November to take some appraisal classes.
I'm sure I'll have time to look around.
Only reason I can't go is because my boyfriend and I are short on cash.

My car is a Camry Hyrbid so we're set for gas. lol
Just that my boyfriend just got a house and he can't afford it alone so his dad is helping to pay.
And me? I have no job. :(
Good news though: I have an interview on Wednesday!
I was going to study Vet Med buuuut I got discouraged.
So I ended up graduating December '08 with my bachelor's in finance.

Any who, let me know how this building of the stand goes! :)

So.
I am starting to think,
That either you like to write some sort of poetry,
Or,
You you write like this because it is fun for you.

LOL You're making fun!!!!!!!!
I do it so it's easy to read instead of having my sentence all stuck together to make this huge sentence that drags on and is so long it has to wrap around to make it seem a lot longer than it actually is... in real life... for real... but really it's not and makes me feel like the sentence is way too long that I'll make everyone lose interest but instead I try to think of a way that might be easier to read so that I feel like my audience is not being put through super long sentences with no ending and then I'll be happy because I think I've done a great job trying to shorten it and organizing it even though in reality, I talk a lot.....

Hahaha

LOL.

I was just messing with ya. I do appreciate your proper use of the written English language though. I'm a language snob and bad grammar really annoys me. I've noticed quite a few folks on here post messages that not only make zero sense but couldn't spell correctly to save their lives. That's pretty bad considering the average age of people on this particular forum is probably 30+. They either didn't make it past the 6th grade or they are just lazy.

Pretty sad.

Haha Yeah I know you're just messin'.
How 'bout that stand! Wooooooooooooooooo!
Oh wait, that's not until later on this month. lol

P.S. Any hobby I tend to pick up or have usually involves people who are older than I am.
It's a little hard considering I don't have a whole lot of people to speak to near my age.
Except my boyfriend... I turned him to the dark side!!
Well, not yet, he's still just doing freshwater. lol

Yeah it's tough to come across someone my age. lol
Let alone coming across someone in the hobby in my city!
Unless they're not as open about it as I am.
Where are the girls?!?! lol
I can't possibly be the only girl in my city who shares the love for this hobby.

At the risk of steering this thread back on topic ...

Ace, would you and Carter post some sort of schematic diagram of the build? I think that would be a really useful reference doc for others who need to build their own stands.

Just so there isn't any possible confusion about tomorrow and whether or not the project will happen, I'm not Carter (sampsonndelila). I'm Ryan and I'm in no way required for the building project to take place.

that looks nice!!!....like the molding and canopy......Does the canopy allow for good air circulation? I ran into that issue with the last one I built...ended up having to modify it to allow for air exchange and fans to exhaust.....Again, it looks great

6 hours of bond-o and sanding, I am half way done with the bottom part. I haven’t touched the canopy. Arg this is going to be a long process. I am painting the stand gloss black. It will shine like a car with a metallic appearance if all goes as planned.
I am sanding all the wood grain off and the thick 2 layer primer will fill all scratches. I laid my first coat of primer and I went home. I will update with pics when I take them.

I hope so, I guess there is no picture yet of how the canopy works. I will send more. The entire back is open. There is a 12x 85 inch ventalation hole. The hood is 15.5 inches tall.

man that looks good casiano. but what are the 'scuff' marks? is that just from the camera?

i thinnk i will use alder for my next stand. i just had a stand built for me and it was from birch. don't get me wrong it is beautiful, but now i like the look of the alder better.
