Figured I'd start a new thread now that the corals and fish are in.
144 gallon Oceanic half circle foam reef.
57.5 x 29 x 29
250w x2 20k MH retro
Here's the build thread with details about the process:
http://maast.org/showthread.php?t=53634
Here's some pics...
Established and new water added along with a couple of test corals... (left alone for a week)
http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs222.snc1/6922_1042234112203_1716090084_81106_6326419_n.jpg

Center of tank: 29" from front of tank to the back wall. (my main focus on this tank was to leave a clear view from front to back so that the depth would be captured)
http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs202.snc1/6922_1042233592190_1716090084_81103_4258388_n.jpg
From left side of tank: (top left you can see a large opening which is a large tunnel that stretches downward over 2.5 feet to the center of the tank, very cool to watch the fish go through it)

Tunnel vision all the way to the other side of the tank! 57"

Closeup shot. You can see one of the openings to the large tunnels, center left.

Thanks guys! I'm so glad it's finally up and running. We are trying to move and for the last two weeks all I have done every night is work on the tank.
Oh... "You know you're a reef addict when you and your bride are selling the furniture in order to get new stuff that matches the tank!" HA!

Thanks, Ray.
Thanks Paul, it was great to finally meet you man!
Jack, lol! Yes, I meant I waited a week before adding coral and fish.
I definitely had plenty more to do before the fish and coral were added. Pumps, refugium, sump etc... etc.. and of course when I got the sump and refugium running I had a leak... ARGH!!! Had to replace some of the plumbing.
Also had to cut some of the plastic on the canopy...because I realized the center brace was blocked by the HOB refugium I added...LOL! As you know I always forget to plan thoroughly! I had a ton of "little things" like that happen throughout this build.

The aquascaping looks awesome Rob! I love the canyon in the middle; the depth adds a LOT to the asthetics (IMO of course). I want to get a similar effect with my next tank. Thanks for the inspiration! :D

So far everything is doing great. I hate living in a different house. I'm always wondering what's going on with the tank.
It's hard to see from the pics, but there's a lot of coral in there, can't wait to see it all grow out.

I used about 75 pounds of live rock. I still want to add more live rock but it will go in the sump. I wanted a very open reef tank with lots of tunnels and swimming room for the fish.

Very cool tank. Have to admit, its one of the first ive seen on here that is made with foam to give it that wall'd look of a reef. Ive seen overflows that resemble rocks to blend in with the aquascaping of real rock and this pretty much matches it. Nice job.

Ace, you rock dude! Thanks for stopping by, the pics look great! So much better than my cell phone... LOL!
Mabel... here's what was hiding...
Yellow Hawaiian Tang
Purple Tang
Yellow Eye Kole Tang
Purple Firefish
Yellow Goby
Lawnmower Blenny
Blue Damsel (not a devil one... it's peaceful and I can't ID it)
Snails
No Hermits
Couple Emerald Crabs
I plan to add more fish when I upgrade the skimmer.
Ryan, feel free to stop by whenever... I moved though. So PM for the address...I also want to check out your new tank as I know you moved too. :)
Thanks, Stoneroller, I love zoas!!! I VAAANT more!!! My fav is the Tubbs Blue Spidermans (I got from Giau) seen in one of the last pics with the regular Tubbs Blues. For Palys it would have to be the Nuclear Greens (also from Giau).

Thanks Mabel. The fish were scared of Ace... he's kind of mean looking with a shaved head... LOL! (jk)
Purples range from $60-$100 depending on size and where you buy them from. I have perfect harmony between the 3 tangs right now and they school together all day long. It's so cool.
I'm afraid to add anything right now because I do not want to disrupt their peace. :)

In that pic...I have a Tyree War Coral, directly above that is a couple of Mohawk Zoas (hard to see)...then above that (the little stick) is a Cali Tort and to the right of that is the ORA Miyagi Tort (I believe that is the one you are talking about?) I love that little colony. Thanks, Giau!

Thanks...you will not be disappointed. The first one I did was about two years ago when I saw Texreefers old tank of the year. So I began experimenting and playing with new ideas...it's limitless.
The tunnels make for a very cool effect too. I wish i would have done more small ones in the backdrop because they are great for mounting/holding frags and skinny tonga branches along with coco worms and even empty coco worm tubes. I made sure all of my tunnels were at angles so that detritus would not build up inside of them.
My best advice though is to use aquarium sealant between the foam and glass/overflows so that the foam will stay sealed and never come loose. I also drilled holes in my overflow and zip tied my tunnels for added security. I do not rely on the foam as a "cement" tool. And....USE black pond foam! It's worth the extra money.

Oh I love Joel's rainbow acans! So pretty in person.
What is it with you guys and your blue bulbs?! LOL!
Can somebody turn the light on so we can see all the goodies you have in the tank. ;)
It looks great. You must feel really good about your foam work. :)

Yeah, Joel's acans rock! I also have his Halloween, Aqua and some other bright one...they ALL rock! By the way...this tank was his originally. Before that it was Felipe's...it was his display tank at the shop. I did add a new canopy though, purchased through Gabe.
So...no 20k bulbs for you huh? I prefer color over growth. The pics are only with 20k 250w MH bulbs x2. I do not supplement...guess you don't really need to with 20k bulbs. Honestly I will probably never go back to 10k, 12k or even 14k...I love the XM 20k bulbs.
I have blue LED lights that come on 3 hours before the MH, turn off when the MH turn on and then they come on again after the MH turn off for another 3 hours...that's my favorite time to view the tank...the corals look unreal under blue LEDs!!!!! Seriously...it's SICK! I have never seen corals pop like they do under blue LEDs.

Got bored this past weekend and decided to clean up the stand... I was able to remove 3 power strips, a useless powerhead and cable managed everything.
I still want to do some more organizing but need to wait until I switch the skimmer out and add the auto top off unit in the next couple of weeks.
Here's some cheesy camera phone pics:

Thanks! And they are cheap!!! I was super surprised to find how inexpensive they are. They also have the 8 plug strip but I could not find a general location so that all of my cables would reach it so I went with the 2.
I have more plans with the loose chords but that has to wait until I swap some equipment out. Nothing will be permanent though and everything can easily be removed for maintenenace. By cleaning up I was also able to get rid of a timer and as mentioned 3 powerstrips.

Don't hate the coralife timer dude!
Oh trust me I've been using them for years and I know not to plug MH or T5 to them. So, I only use them for steady power on basic equipment and the timers for fuge light and moonlights.

I think I miss my 20k bulbs...I was liking the 14k's when I first put them on and it's nice to see the corals grow really well with them, but I think in a few months after I get some nice growth I'll be switching back.
We'll see, before switching back I may invest in another blue LED PowerBrite strip... I have two at the moment but you can barely tell they are on when the 14k's are running.

The first time I ran the 20k's I was sold forever....but the growth was slow....think the bulbs need to be switched out every 6 months to get the most out of them.
My favorite time to view the tank at the moment is before and after the MH when just the blue LEDs are on. The powerbrite strips are super sweet! The corals pop like I've never seen before. Some of the colors are so neon they become fuzzy...or my eyes have a hard time adjusting to them.
Thanks for the comments.

Google "PowerBrite LED" they are all over the net...last time I bought one I just looked around for the least expensive price...I paid like $50 for a linking module shipped. The main module with the power is around $60. Well worth the cost in my opinion though. They sell 10k, 50/50 and 460nm Blue.

That's with a phone?????? Wowwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL! I know right. This phone takes mad pics.
So there is no confusion...here's an example of the actual phone pic uploaded to flickr and then after a little contrast editing using flickr's tools:
straight phone:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4070/4450048343_b00b54f8d2.jpg
after flickr edits:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2739/4417673299_50f6a34433.jpg
...pretty much the same...just a slight deeper contrast and cropped to put more focus on the coral.
The other catch is I can only take nice pics of the corals near the glass....if I try for something closer to the middle of the tank, by the time I zoom in on it, it's pretty pixelated.

Kevin....not bad for a cell phone huh..? Remember that SPS chunk I got from you a while back....red bug weekend....well I thought it was dead....but I let it be and about a month ago the think started to turn from a soft white to a brown and now it's encrusting and getting pretty big.....just started with the green. Do you still have the mother colony? If so...what does it look like?

Yes...the pink jade and the unknown one are still living but not doing anything. I'm staying hopeful as I have had other SPS do this in the past....look as they are dying and then BAM...they take off. LOL.
I love the bonsai and the oregon tort they are beautfiul and growing quickly....wish I could get some nice pics of all the SPS.
Let me know when you want some zoas/palys man...to get you going again.

Looking good Rob. I like the lawnmower blenny. Miss mine - he used to get mad if I stuck my hand in the tank and didn't have anything for him. As a peace offering I had to give him some nori or something and he would then let me continue w/out trying to "de-algae" my arm.

Mr Cob
Fri, 16th Apr 2010, 09:30 AM
^no, but I have been wanting to get him one ever since I saw your son's tank. He made his home right up front as you can see in the pic so might be worth trying the pistol out.
He has like 3 entrances and exits to that rock. So funny watching him going in and out of them.
John that's funny. My fish know not to mess with me or they go to Jack....hahaha...well maybe Ray now that he is getting Jack's eel.

Picked up a new fish this past weekend and he seems to be doing great. I have been tangless for awhile so glad to have one again. Powder blues are my favorite. If he makes it, I do not plan to add another. I have tried Powders in the past and did not have much luck. It's been a couple of years now.

GCReef onyx clown update:
Still doing well and kicking....their growth has slowed a bit because I stopped feeding 2-3 times a day until I can get this algae problem under control.
Funny thing is....my RBTA (from bstreep) split and the clone took off and the female went with it. lol! Now the clone seems to be sp,litting if you look closely in the pics you can kind of tell.

Thanks, Jack....yeah the RBTA clone is now back with the mother along with both clowns. Been an interesting few days watching this clone cruise around with the clowns only to end up back where they started. I can't tell if it ever split though because it just looks like one big anemone.
