I need to update some threads in the FST section, but I can only add to the mess. Could this be fixed please?

You can't edit posts after a one hour time window has passed from the time of the initial post.

But moderators can!

I can't remember - what was the reason for this?

Yes. You can ask a Mod to edit it for you.

Bill, I'm not exactly sure why the rule was implemented. It was done before I was on the BOD.

it doesnt make sense as a rule but one thing i learned on this site is not to go questioning the mods or bods unless you wanna get banned. IMHO

In some aspects it's good and others it's a pain. It is good in that it keeps people from editing things out and then denying they said something or offered something for sale at a certain price and then backed out later. I've seen on some sites a person offer something for sale at one price and then when someone says they will take it, the seller then edits it raising their price. Or they mark it as sold, editing out the details and then when there is an issue later with the sale there is no longer a public record. It is a pain if you are selling something and have a laundry list of items as you can't update the original post and have to then repost everything again in the same thread. Most buyers don't pay attention to all the other posts, they just look at the first one. Other than that, if you made a typo or something and didn't catch it in the first hour after posting it, people already saw it so why change it.

Look, this site is for the members, it's not a BOD or MOD site, it's a reef site for you, me, for all of us, it's our site. If you have a concern then voice it, but voice it appropriately by following the rules of the site. Have a suggestion...post it here in the Comments/Suggestions forum just as Erik has done. Have a complaint about someone, submit it privately via PM.

I personally do not like the edit rule but that's my opinion. I think it was implemented because people were saying bad things in their posts then editing it as if they never said it. It happened before I became a BOD as well.

What folks don't realize about posting:

When you subscribe to a thread, you get an email when a post is made on that thread. Everyone who subscribes to the thread does - and subscribing to threads by default, is part of your user CP. You get the complete, UNEDITED version of that post! These emails get dumped into my "MAAST" email folder. So, when people THINK they might be getting away with something, they really aren't.

Rob, Agent Jones is just expressing a common feeling of the Membership.

Good point. I'll bring this up to the BOD and see what comes of it.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I would like to be able to edit my own posts in the for sale forum so I can change the price as I please. It is my item, even if I wanted to raise the price that is MY option. No internet website can hold me to that, or make any legal claim stating against it, so what's the problem? If you sell an item, you should be able to delete all information you posted in regards to it and be able to change the item to SOLD. This is way too much moderation for a site. The only time a moderator should have to edit a post is to mark the post with " Post Deleted Due To Inappropriate Content". If someone changes the way they feel, or they feel that they represented themselves inappropriately, they should be able to edit their own posts. This is not a time capsule where things are to be locked away from their owners. If that was the case, then at a users request, any and all content related to them should be able to be ENTIRELY deleted from the site at any time. I would bet that there could be law related implications if someone was to take it that far.

The bad part is that I asked for something simple, came back to check the status, and had to get this involved and write the above soapbox banter. If this is a site for the users, let them edit their own words forever, not for a predetermined amount of time.

An example of where a change brought on some unwanted side effects!

I'm hoping we can get back to where we no longer need to be overmoderated, and over edited on this site.

The issue (edit rule) has been brought up to the BOD, I'll let everyone know the outcome. Give it a couple of days though...not everyone checks this site every hour like us. LOL.

Erik it through me off as well. I was on hiatus for 8 months and now that im back ive noticed a few "odd" things that have been changed. The edit mechanism being one of them. I personally wont be on here nearly as much as i was the last few years so I say let it be and go on my way. Im sure everything that has been put in place has a valid reasoning/explanation.

just my opinion, but why not allow the edit but also make it a must for people to put a reason for editing the post. Because as of right now when editing a post at the bottom it ask "reason for editing" but people leave it blank, as do i.

Members,

First, thank you for voicing your concerns about the restrictions to editing your posts. The BOD has been discussing this issue over the last couple of days and we have a majority vote to remove the “edit” restrictions.

The site admin has been notified and within a couple of days the restrictions will be removed.

Thanks for your patience and feedback. Had no one spoken up, the restrictions would probably still be in place. So, again, thank you.

Great! Thanks, Rob.

We're seeing the first signs of "four legs good, two legs better" moving back to "four legs good, two legs bad".
