noticed my clam didn't open up when i got back from port A over the weekend. reached in picked it up and a small 1: worm looking like a bristle worm fell out from the bottom. pulled out the worm and come to find out there is no clam inside clam. any ideas what happened?

it died...the worm was just cleaning up. hard to tell with you gone. how long have you had the clam??

hard to tell without seeing the system and knowing all the parameters. but some clams are just that way they come in with a parasite or other problems and the stress of moving them around does them in. the saying goes if you want one buy four.

Check the shell. If it is not growing (white edge) then it was not doing well. Often clam not doing well and would not show anything other than not growing. It then died overnight when all of it's reserves runs out.
I strongly disagree with R.Allard about buy 4 when you want one. The only time my clams died was with tank disaster (happened once) and when a few my clams got pinched mantel disease back in the early 2000. Clams are very hardy if your tank meet their requirement (light and clean water) and if they are parasites free and disease free (white spotted mantel disease and pinched mantel disease) They hardly ever get sick otherwise, unless injury or bother by fish

The general rule is the smaller the clam the greater the chance of death
