Today marks the opening of hurricane season. And for many of us this means going to extremes to be prepared. Last year, Hurricane Ike pounded the Texas Gulf Coast and effectively forced a lot of people out of this great hobby. I was one of the fortunate ones. I had moved out of my Galveston apartment the month before and was living in Baytown, a little east of Houston...and far more inland than Galveston, although we were still pretty close. I lost power for a couple days, but due to proper planning and execution, I didn't lose any livestock.

After living through this experience and talking at length with various other aquarists, I have devised a list of what to do and what not to do in these situations. I think it is fairly helpful and may help some avoid mistakes and livestock loss.

This is my first tank for saltwater and since my tank is still in its infancy I have put in a requisition for a hurricane free season.

you're lucky...you are a good distance away from the water. not a whole lot to worry about.

yIKEs! I hope we dodge the canes again over here. Ike was a couple hundred miles away and the surge still got me.

A pic from my back deck on a normal day.

I didn't mean to trivialize what you guys go through on the coast, just trying to make a funny. I seriously hope that y'all don't have to go through anything like that this year or any in the future.
