I have visited a few of the LFS's here in SA and have had wonderful luck with every one as far as customer service, price, honesty, etc. I was just wondering if anyone has a rec for a the best place to buy above-base level LR here in town. I am returning to the hobby after about 7 or 8 years off, and I have noticed that, while more places sell LR, it's pretty white "base" looking. I have a 75 with about 40lbs of base LR in it right now, and I'm looking for bit more to finish off the tank as it cycles.

Is the good stuff necessary, or can I just get the base stuff and wait for it to catch up? I just remember the stuff I bought years ago (granted, it was 7.99 a pound) was covered in good stuff, critters, and even some feather dusters.

Thanks in advance!

I have bought from several stores and Gabe's is the nicest looking. To answer your question, base rock is supposed to be dried, dead live rock. Yes, it should be useable and 'catch-up'. Be carefull, somethimes it is dense limestone instead, not as porous and not as good.

Definitely Gabe's. The stuff he's gotten in the past 2 shipments is beautiful. Very porous, colorful, and light for the size. Makes me wish I had a new tank to set up. I think his ran $7.99/lbs.

I've seen similar rock at other lfs, that sold for more than $10/lbs.

I agree Gabe has some of the best live rock in town. His pukani rock is awesome.

AD on 281 has a tank full of long pieces of coral. Good branches from my novice point of view.

Haven't been to Gabes, but the other three places I've been to has AD at the top for customer service.

Thanks everyone. I went over to Gabe's and got some great fully-cured pieces to finish off my aquascaping. Now I just have to wait!
