Here is a look into my NEW build it still has a long way to go. A few things I have not yet installed and a few things I need to buy...No teaser pics haha This is my Modern Japanese Style Shallow Reef Build. After my great Modern tank from ace I decided to try and build something alittle different but still have that modern look. I have seen this look on a few tanks from japan but none here in the states. I hope you guys enjoy the Build!

Wow...Very nice but different. Did you do the stand yourself?

Yes

that looks really nice! just a couple of questions...

1. does the molding of the tank (on the bottom) fit outside of the top of the stand?

2. are you planning to put anything for support under the sump/fuge?

wow reefcube! you always have great tank designs. and the construction is always top-notch. do you build stand for others? if so, i have to get with you.

i too am very interested in the japanese-style tanks, so i am sure this is going to be an interesting build.

the tank still has a long ways to go. I am not sure yet what i want to do with the sump I may just add a board of somekind to lay under the sump or I might make a small shelf for it. The tank trim does stick out alittle bit but most of the trim all around is on the stand itself. Do you think it will be ok? I figured it should be fine since the part of the trim that is supported has all of the actual tank itself supported. I hope this makes sense hehe

it should be fine, especially since it is so shallow. if it were a deep tank i would be concerned. why dont you put an HDPE bottom in under the sump to keep that clean look?

Looking real good. Looks like a Elos skimmer in the sump.

Have you considered making a few endcaps to hide the profile of the extrusion on the light supports? You could tap out the holes and make some square caps out of aluminum or plastic. It will add to the clean, crisp look.

ReefCube
Sat, 11th Apr 2009, 11:44 AM
its more like a regular white not really glossy just white not too dull. Maybe my flash on my camera made it seem that way

Here are some new pics of where my tank is at today..

addition of H20 with some prime just to get it going
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e359/MalawiCichlids/NEWREEF3.jpg

I added a sweet piece of TONGA to get me started
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e359/MalawiCichlids/NEWREEF2.jpg

Water is in..time to cycle!
I plan to speed it up by adding water from my other tank.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e359/MalawiCichlids/NEWREEF.jpg

Some of the mods i did was to make use to my T-slots of my hanging arms. I machined the slot open a bit more so I can add the ATI fixture and be able to slide it out of the way whenever I need to do a water change. I also did some small mods to the plumbing and skimmer to make less "Fizz" in my sump so i don't get salt creep buildup..

Your tank is most impressive, especially the hand made base. Not sure if this photo will come along but at that last MAAST gathering there was an overly think acrylic that had a windowed base that I thought was a neat direction to go in. You have to keep a clean sump to pull it off but since these tanks have so much science lab looking gizmos underneath I thought it would be very cool to leave at least three sides open or exposed but covered with glass to show off the guts. Again, great job.

yeah it is very nice. and that tonga branch is sweet. i was going to use tonga as well in my cube, but then my lfs got in a shipment of totoka and it was love at first sight. haha, j/k...but no really, it was!

i think your other tank, the cube with the awesome stand, had a single rock like that, right? it looked pretty sweet with all the frags growing off of it. how is that tank doing? is this one going to be like that one?

Did you make the light "arms" yourself or are they store bought? How are they attached to the tank/stand? I'm thinking of doing something similar and need some ideas.
