How long does everyone wait before adding newly mixed saltwater for a water change. I typically let it mix overnight, but have got some time tonight and am getting a little impatient.

It depends on how much water you make up. With Red Sea Coral Pro I wait at least 24 hours or more to let the ph stablize around 8.2 plus you also want to drive out the co2. I make at least 20 gal at a time. If you already have water made then a couple of hours with a pump and air stone is fine in my opinion. One more thing temp should be pretty close to the tank.

I try to wait a few hours, but I have used the water in as short as an hour, completely mixed and introduced via the sump.

Thanks, looks like I'll be letting it circulate overnight again, but good to know that I could mix and use within a few hrs if needed.

It is funny i am looking at this ? right now I am reading the conscientious MARINE AQUARIST book, great book by the way by ROBERT M. FENNER and on page 94 he recommends a week or more in advanced. To tell you the truth I have no trouble waiting at least 24hrs before a water change. I have mixed 35gal in advanced and let it sit at least a week or two with a pump and heater of course and had no problems with eigther method. I would go with what works for you but at least wait 24hrs.

happy mixing and read as much as you can then expirment.:) I think ROBERT M. FENNER is good but I think [along with others] that your best reading is going to come  from MAAST.

so I shouldn't put water from the hose in the tank and then dump cups of salt in there and let the power heads mix it????

i've been buying 20gals of pre mix from Aquarium Designs every two weeks for my 65gal mixed tank, then just put it into my sump. Takes me about 1 1/2. No problems but when i was mixing my own i'd wait 24hrs before water change

What Mike said (texreefer). As long as there's nothing left on the bottom of the bucket AND the water is clear, I'll use it. Sometimes only 15 minutes with a BIG mixing pump.

Glad to see I'm not the only one guilty of doing this.

thing is you don't do any water changes to your 300gal.....you just top off with the water hose.....

same as mike and bill for me. if you mix it too long or aerate it too much, you can get precipitation which causes the alk and calc levels to drop.

I only do 5 gallon buckets and I don't wait any longer than an hour like some of the other guys. If I wait 24 hours my pump has the temp of my bucket at about 88 degrees. I have mixed it with a plastic spoon until it was clear before and dumped it in via the sump.
