I grabbed limestone out of a dried creek bed going 281 N. "Cooked It" for a few days with a couple powerheads. I didn't see a need for a heater since the powerheads put out...... It takes a long time to get stuff growing on it. Its also HEAVY. It does just fine as base rock.

I used plain jane saltwater. I still got a light diatom film cover, but I figured that was better than what it could've been.

Is it pourous? The reason why live rock works so well as filtration, especially FIJI is because its very porous and has a lot of surface area for bacteria to grow. Deep inside the porous rock where there is very little oxygen(anoxic zone), another type of bacteria grows. This bacteria serves as denitrifying bacteria and is called anarobic bacteria.

its been sitting in bucktes with a 1 to 4 ratio of bleach and water on my back patio, i have six 5g buckets full. i know bleach doesnt sound good but it will evaporate after being saoked with no left over residue. just to make sure after the bleach and water im going to saok them in just water for anlother 24 hours and set them out to dry. they have cleaned up very well.

:applause:I hade a good 10lbs rock in my tank I thought it was cool and it would save me money but I was wrong all it did was cause a algy problem since I took It out my tank is doing a whole lot better . what i mean about KEEP IT REAL. DO YOU SEE HOLEY ROCK ON THE REEFS,I DONT THINK SO. so in less you want your tank to look like guadalupe river I would stick with live rock and live rock only it looks better and it is one of the main way to keep your tank healthy. your fish would  for it.

I had a fifteen pound rock in my rig and a perpetual problem with that brown diatom algae. Got rid of the rock, got rid of most of the brown. Started RODI and now I'm brown stuff free.

Holey rock should be used in moderation. If you use a lot of it you are going to have problems. If you use a small amount then you will not have any problems. I have used small amounts in the past and never had problems. I'm refering to like 10-20 pounds in a 120gallon reef.

Let me amend my earlier remark. My Holey Rock cost me 15 dollars... it was a 30 pound stone in a 100 gallon tank.
