After slowly aquiring all the pieces for my new 90g (about 6 months), I finally added water today. After swallowing about a gallon of salt water (trying to prime the overflow) I got it running...yeah for me!! Now for my problem....the water returning to the sump from the overflow is VERY loud. There is about a 3 inch drop from the end of the return PVC to the waiting water the sump...it sounds like a waterfall in my livingroom. Do I extend the return PVC so that the end is under the water in the sump? Any tricks out there?

Yes your drain should extend beyond the level in the sump. I have mine about four inches under the water level. This will also cut down on salt creep. You might also consider adding a 100 micro filter sock to trap bubbles.

Yup lower your drain more into the sump. It will reduce alot of noise! :)

Thanks guys...I'll have my husband extend the pvc tomorrow. I already have filter socks on both overflow returns! So lets pray for less noise. I need to get this tank up and running pretty quick now..I have a bubble coral and a kenya tree that have out grown my 29G BC.

same as above. I have a 45 degree angle fitting which goes under water about an inch. Filter sock helped a lot too, both with noise and microbubbles, but I still think they are a pain to clean and maintain. Also, assuming you have good in tank flow, might try running a lower volume through the sump if you are not already, maybe 4-5x tank volume.

If you can, try putting rubble under your drain instead of a sock.

You may also be getting excessive noise from trapped air. Does your drain have a durso, and if so, have you tried running tubing down it to "burp" trapped air?
