I was hoping somebody out there has one of these and could tell me how well it works. It came recomended by a shop owner... I have a PRO CLEAR AQ. wet/dry and I need to replace the protein skimmer.

I have the g2 model. It is reliable and performs very well for its price. There are also several mods you can do to it. I added a gate valve and the mesh mod to mine. I had it for a few years before the pump went out. I replaced it with the g3's pump. The g2 is supposedly too small for my tank size but it works fine. I would recommend it to someone looking for a good skimmer on a budget.

ASM's are great. They definitely work; the service company I used to work for installed ASM's on most of our client's tanks, and we used them in the shop, too.

I had a G2 on my tank in Missouri, and I loved it also. Very good skimmer, very good price. The latest rave is the octopus skimmers and they are about the same price. I had even heard at one point that ASM become Octopus..??? not sure if that is a valid claim or not. Either way, good skimmer.

ASM and Octopus are definitely not the same. Octopus is made by CoralVue, the same company that makes those crummy MH bulbs.
As to the situation you may have heard of, there was a website called asmskimmers.com that sold modified ASM's. This site did not represent the company, and ASM was not happy with their products being modified and sold like they were the original product. They issued the owners of the site an ultimatum to respect their pricing and not sell modified products. The site owners refused, so ASM cut them off completely. Now asmskimmers.com redirects to a site that sells Octopus skimmers.

I ran an ASM skimmer for years and have nothing bad to say about them. My last (ASM G4+) was way too large for my existing 58 gallon aquarium so I sold it. I now have the Octopos Extreme 200 and both of them are nice skimmers. I'd say the Octo is a thicker acrylic but as far as performance goes about the same. I'd recommend both of them be run in an area of sump that has constant level though.

I will probably get a G2, I just need to double check its not too wide for my sump.

Corky If I remember right the G3 is only like $10 dollars more. If you can get it to fit "BIGGER IS BETTER" LOL!
