Elegance

Anyone have any advice on these guys? I'm thinking about getting one, but want to make the best decision. I'm not a big fan of buying hard to keep animals. What are the pros and cons to the elegance coral?

Pros...looks good and purty

Cons...hard to keep, 85% can't do it, sweepers kill corals next to it, needs to be left in the Ocean.

I agree with Steve. Kristy just had to have one because they are so pretty, even though we had heard how difficult they can be. So we bought one, and it went downhill pretty fast. We are considering it with the flowerpot corals, pretty to look at, but hard/impossible to keep long term and better left in the ocean. Again, just our opinion... Mike (& Kristy)

I agree and these along with a few others bring up serious debate over and over. There is always the thought when you see one in the LFS of whether or not to get it.

Pros: It will have a better home and chance of survival in my tank than at the LFS.

Cons: If I buy it they will just continue to harvest these and sell them. Of course if you don't buy it, odds are someone else will or it will just die in their tank. Then again, they will still most likely be harvested because the harvester can get money for it from someone on this planet.

It's just one of those blanked if you do blanked if you don't situations.

Sounds about the same as the info I read on them several years back. Still hard to keep.

Had someone tell me on reefcentral that the Aussie elegance is much more hardy than the Indonesian elegance. Any info on this? Or are we talking about a 75% death rate as opposed to an 85% death rate.

Glad I scrolled all the way down, cause I was gonna mention that the Australian Elegance corals seem to fare better... that said: they're still not an easy coral to keep. But not impossible. If you read any 1980's Marine tank book, it will say that the best way to keep acroporas in your tank is to soak them in bleach, and let them dry out... and look at us now :bigsmile:

I kept one for about two years, then traded it away cause it was getting too big. It would also sting my sps. THe person that got it had for about a month and it died on him. I dont know how i was able to keep it, dont know what i did. THe only thing i know is taht i was lucky!!
