if you mean a blue hippo -

yep, although the blue will eventually outgrow the tank. you may even add the blue first and then add the yellow after it has settled in and is eating well since they can be a bit tricky at first.

I've had blues, yellow, purple and naso tangs together and have never seen any problems. So far I say its a big myth about the fighting. :) Or I've been lucky. I just added an orange shoulder tang to my tank and my purple tang has been in there for about a year. They love each other.

I've got multiple tangs. Started with my yellow, then added a Vilamini. Recently moved my small hippo to the tank and although she got a little stressed, she's been eating well for over a month. Last week I added a clown tang and nobody has ever bothered him. My hippo, despite being the smallest in the tang, has the most desire to claim areas and try to "shoo" the others away. Never picks or nips, just goes right up against them and stays there...which sucks because she's been having issues with ick off and on (put in at Xmas time) and she gave it to one of my new anthias that wasn't strong enough to fight it off.

BAD TANGS! It could also be because they are in a smaller area. I've got a 120 right now.

My meanest fish was the Clarkii clown and I brought him to the LFS. I took him out, added some Oscellaris, put him back in and he was fine. Then I tried adding a couple of anthias and the brat had one by the fin and then fed a green wrasse to his anemone.

The only other fish that I have that can be mean are my wrasse (looks like a six-line without the lines)...he tormented my yellow wrasse (similar to a coris wrasse) until he hid. I thought he was dead, but a week later he came out and has been out since. My small little white and gray damsel can be a pest, but it's usually if the fish get near his clam shell...he attacks me if I get near his clam shell LOL.

I even have a coral beauty that's been behaving quite nicely with anything I add.

They can, but blue tang need to be in earlier for ideal situation. The meaner tangs of the more common tangs are Powder Blue, Purple and Yellow.

I found it at Aquarium design while "selling" some frags. Jason (the owner) showed it to me. I had never seen one before and I am glad he did. The belly is not a defined as others i have seen, but when the stress wears off and his diet improves, he should be more vibrant. the coolest part is his dorsal spines. They have a red tint to them and when they flare they flash a very distinctive red. I'll post picts in a few days....

One question. All my fish are freaked out by the Yellow belly. and hide. he does not chase them, but is in constant motion. Will the other fish eventually come back out?

no, they will never get used to him, you need to get him outta there..... i bet he would fit in my tank :p

jk... i am sure he will settle down soon and the other fish will get used to him. you may see a small outbreak of ich tho from the stress - if so, dont panic. just feed small amounts several times a day. if the hippo isnt eating now or soon, you may want to add some garlic to the food to stimulate the appetite a bit.

Hobo...LOL..You got me on that one...:applause:

The yellow belly has not only eaten but has proven to be a PIG so far. He scares me a bit though. he wedges himself in real tight spaces in the live rock and wiggles around till he gets out. he tries to figure out ways to get through tiny holes...goes in backward, forward I am not used to that active of a fish. Are all blues super active?

how would you suggest feeding him his seasweed/herbavore food?

i feed my tangs with a clip tied to my return line at the top of the tank. it may take a while, but they will usually get used to that. some people rubber band it to a small rock that they just put in an open area at the bottom of the tank.

Nice score on the yellow bellied blue hippo tang! Blue hippos are very odd critters, never known any other fish to behave the way they do. Ours does the same thing with wedging himself into impossibly small spaces and wiggling to get himself in and out of a crack. I know exactly what you are referring to...

You want to feed the seaweed daily, best if it's a small amount a couple of times a day. When Ace said don't panic if you see a little ich from the stress, that was great advice because blue hippos are fairly prone to ich, especially when in a new transition. Good luck with your new fish and don't forget to post those pics!

what would you feed your tang? I have read about nori, spinach, romaine lettuce, and macro algea... It all seems a bit confusing since my wife and I want to kep a healthy fish population. At teh moment I have some dried seaweed on a veggie clip on the side of our tank. Problem is the seaweed breaks apart and floats around....help?

i feed the nori that is used to make sushi. some people get it at HEB, i got mine online a lot cheaper. some people say not to use the roasted stuff (they say the fish dont like it as much) but my fish seem to love it. i also feed frozen three to four times a day (small amounts) the equivalent of 6-8 of those cubes in the pre cubed food per day. mine is a mix of brine, mysis, blood worms, and krill.

as far as the bits of nori floating around, my tangs eat it up before it has a chance to fall apart. they are waiting at the clips (i have two on opposite ends of the tank to curb agression) when i knock the old nori off into the water and put fresh in the clips. they eat the old first and then start in on the new stuff.

So I guess eventuay the tangs will know where the clips are located and go to there for a snack. Takes time I guess...until they figure it out they will continue to get the frozen food. They have been eating it very well so far...

even after they find the nori and eat it well, i would still give them frozen food.

The following pictures are of our Yellow Belly Blue Tang are not very good. They do not really show his coloration, which at the moment is not very bold. His (or her?) belly is pale yellow and the top dorsal fins have this redish tint to them...Anyway, here are the pictures, enjoy...

http://www.maast.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=80&pictureid=471You can kinda see the yellow here...

Here is a litter glimpse at the red in his fin...again does not do him justice...quite striking when he flares his spins...
