I have seen people use eggcrate but the holes i think may be too large and small fish still might get sucked in just wondering what you guys have done to your setups to keep fish from getting suked in.

I have a piece of fine mesh netting to keep my wrasse from jumping out. the netting also covers the top of my overflow box.

or try plastic gutter's guard from HomeDepot, but eggcrate is easier to glue on to acrylic. Just double the eggcrate to make the hole smaller.

We used egg crate and then "stitched" gutter guard to it with fishing line, with the grid lines of the two materials offsetting one another to create holes half the size of egg crate. Then we just rest this on top of the calfo. Even with all of this, a determinedly stupid cleaner wrasse can still seem to find its way into the wonderful world of overflows.

i was thinking about making an additional piece that i can attach to the top/sides with slots cut in it and glue it on top of the calflo

I use a plastic gutter guard and cut it to fit. Works perfect...mine is sealed with the foam I sprayed on the overflow box.
