Ok so heres my deal, I am in the process of getting a pump, and came accross a mag 5 for 40$ shipped (what a deal) and I wanted to make sure its what I need. The water needs to be pumped up roughly 30in., but to be safe I would say 34". I have a custom overflow (bought from thesponge) and its intank dimensions are 3.5" Deep 6" tall and 5.5" wide and has one 1 inch J tube. It had two but one was lost and replaced with a piece of 1/2in. Its estimated at 295gph by thesponge. The head loss indicates that it would be pumping at roughly 380 gph. So should I get a second 1 in. J tube? The flow comming down should be more than the upward flow right? Thank you.

The max flow down should always be more than the amount going up or you will flood your tank. If your through put down is big enough you will only flow as much as your pump can handle. You can always put a valve on the pump to help control the amount of flow.

easier to choke the pump than to choke the overflow. IMO

yes. with both tubes in place, you should get a drain capacity of about 600 gph.

if you have 600 gph, then I would sugest a bigger return pump. I just went through the same thing and went with others recomendations by using a smaller return pump. It is very hard to choke the overflow. I had to order a gate valve because a ball valve would not do the fine tuning that it needed. Also had to get a second return pump.
