I bought a gate valve mod for my g2 a few years ago. It was too big for my sump and I couldn't get it to fit so I sold it. I just ordered a gate valve recently and I'm going to try to make my own. Here is a website that shows what one looks like for the g2. http://www.asmskimmer.com/mod1.htm

might b dumb ? but what does this do for the skimmer/how does it make it better

It allows for a more precise control of the skimmer. Another benefit is that you can direct where the water comes back to the sump. The way the skimmer is designed now is that the flows out of the top of the pipe. I have some salt on the surface of my calcium reactor that I think is the result of the bubbles popping from the cascade of water. I will make the water return closer to the baffles.

The main reason I want to get it is for noise, and for the direction of return. My skimmer is large for my sump, and the is little room for cascading water. Saltcreep would be crazy.

I guess my main question would be:

Is there a certain height for the open end and for the T? The sell the exact gate valve in the link at Lowes, so I am going to pick up the parts and get it together.

I havent seen pvc gate valves at hd or lowes, I have only seen ball valves.I have tried both and the gate valve worked waaay better

Lowes has gate valves? I have never seen them there. I think the open end for the g2 has to reach the top of the neck. I don't think it matters much. Can someone correct me, but I think the way the mod works is that the valve restricts the flow so that the water rises in the skimmer body.

I think they switched to another skimmer manufacturer.
