View Full Version : ASM G4 big enough for a 150gal?

I'm upgrading from a great Euroreef skimmer that's too small for my tank, and am considering the ASM G4. It's rated at 350, which from what I'm reading, I can cut in half for a real rating of about 175. Is that a good rule of thumb, or should I be going bigger than this? Thanks.

Decided against the ASM, but two basic question still stand:

How much do manufacturers generally overrate the capacity rating for skimmers?
Should you really consider them ~1/2 the rated capacity? Does it vary by mfg? If so, which tend to be the most accurate?

and

How far over the size of your tank should you shoot for when choosing a skimmer?

Interested to hear your responses. Thanks..

Depends on the company/brand. Some companies dratically go over board with the rating others including ASM are usually right on. A lot also depends on your bio load in the tank.

From what I've read about all the skimmers, each company is accurate on thier capacities, and all the other companies are overrated.

yes I have and I will again (just set the tank up in TX). It works great, I beleive that it is about your total package (ie: powerheads, fuge, setup) more than its about one peice of equipment,

I got a sump, a sock, lr rubble, cheato, tlf carbon and tlf ROWAphos. The poor RS135 just isn't keeping up with the bioload. To its credit though, I am redesigning the sump because the water level in the skimmer chamber isn't constant. I know this is bad. It will be fixed by the time I get a new skimmer.

After a failed shot at a used DAS, and looking at lots of options, I'm thinking Deltec AP701. I REALLY don't want to have to buy another skimmer down the road. If anyone knows of anyone selling a used one, let me know.. So far I've only found sellers far, far away, and who don't want to deal with shipping.. There are lots of close alternatives too, but I keep coming back to this model...
